Hi RW,
Thanks so much for your feedback. What you say is very interesting, because a dog behaviorist I consulted saw BC in Boone as well; she's worked with many dogs, including training dogs for various television programs and movies. He tends to drop to his belly when approached by strange dogs while he's onleash, and that was something she identified as particularly BC behavior. I agree that Boone does have a strong resemblance to Whippets - that was one of our first guesses.
Because Boone was born wild in Egypt, in an area only relatively recently developed and 'settled', so to speak, we have doubts about whether his ancestors would have had much interaction with breeds such as BC or Whippet - when Egyptians acquire non-native dogs, they tend to go for GSD, Rottweilers and other breeds of that type - more imposing dogs. In the area where Boone was born are many feral dogs, and some of them are practically indistinguishable from purebred Saluki. It's not impossible, of course, that somewhere in the area there are (or were) a few BCs and/or Whippets running around, so perhaps a genetic test will show that in Boone's background, but currently our theory is Saluki for his sighthound aspect and Canaan for his herding aspect. Of course, he may be so mixed that nothing really stands out - realistically, that seems the most likely outcome, but who knows. :)
