I loved reading all the stories! It reminded me of my house! Our boys are also excellent trainers. Or we are excellent students, however you want to look at it ;)
We have learned to put the garbage in another room behind a locked door. It took us some time to learn, but we caught on eventually. We tried closed lids on the cans first, with no success. Lesson One: Murphy proved to be a great garbage can cracker. We then learned lesson #2: Murphy knows how doors work.
This eventually led to a whole new set of lessons for the humans in our family. Our boys like to know what is going on at all times. Since Murphy is the only one who can reach the door handles he opens all the doors for Maynard, such a nice guy. Lesson 3: If you leave any door unlocked, and close it, its opened in no time. Lesson 4; This includes the door that go outside AND the bathroom door..... Mom and Dad caught onto this lesson really fast, but our friends need a little help in avoiding and moments that may make your cheeks blush. So we now have a sign that hangs on the inside of the bathroom door that states Lesson #5: "If you DO NOT require assistance from a furry friend, Lock the Door Behind You!" Needless to say there were a few mishaps before we put up the sign.....
Lesson #6: Giving is the greatest gift of all. Murphy taught me that it feels good to give a little. I kept coming home from work and finding him dead asleep on our loveseat. He would jump down instantly when we came in, but he was doing it everyday while we were away anyway, so we decided to just give in and make him happy.Murphy now has his own loveseat located in the bedroom so he can be a people too. He fell fast alseep that first evening and groaned with satisfaction all night long. Seeing him so happy made us happy.
Lesson #7 All dogs are created equal. Ever since our little Maynard came into the house, we seem to be making up for the difference in their sizes every day. One such example is the bed. Maynard gets to sleep on the bed because he is so small it wasn't a big deal to begin with until Murphy helped us to realize how VERY unfair it was for him to be stuck on HIS couch while we were all cuddling together like a family at night with out him. So, once again we learned to adapt. Now Murphy has his very own (Very Big) blanket to lay on so he can sleep in the bed with us too. It keeps his hair off the bed, but now we all 4 share a Qween, and it brings us closer on a nightly basis. :)
We continue to learn and to be trained in the inevitable events of Life With Dogs.
