does size matter?

I would encourage your sister to go to the shelter and look at the dogs that are literally dying for a chance like this.  Dal mix, BC mix, hounds, Aussie and shepherd mixes, even many retriever mixes, make great running companions and often die in the shelter because they are too active for the average home. [sm=sad.gif]

I don't know where you are, but here the shelters are full of hunting dogs that failed for one reason or another.  Wonderfully nice dogs, but with a terrifically high need for exercise.  My own Maggie was from treeing dog breeding and is just about as close to perfect as you can get, but she always has loved to run.

    Good luck!

rescue whippet.  Low maintainance coat (need to buy them one for cold weather however).  Enjoy being a couch potota inside.  Usually temperments are lovely.  Stamina to run forever it seems.  NEVER let off lead in an unsecured area.  Personal emotional benefit, rescue a retired or to be destroyed racer who was not fast enough.

I am no expert but must agree with several in that there are tons of rescue dogs that would make great running partners, I'm sure many are there because they were too high of energy for their owners.  Our rescue is huge and contrary to my experience is VERY high energy.  He's still grwoing so I don't walk/run him too much (try to keep it between 2-4 miles daily) but I cannot imagine how many miles he would like to go.
I would for that reason also look at adult dogs who she could train to run with her immediately, IMHO nearly any of the hounds you'd see in rescue centers would LOVE to run with her.
    good luck

I'm not a runner and really don't know anything about this, but all the people I see doing serious running with their dogs have pretty good sized ones.  I might be wrong, but it doesn't seem like a toy breed would be able to run far enough or fast enough to keep up with a runner.

Fast enough, yeah, but not far enough.  My little terrier mix outruns greyhounds at the dog park, but shortly exhausts himself.

I agree with everything above, a JRT sounds like a good idea but maybe any small terrier would be a good choice? My baby's only 13 weeks old and she has endless energy[8|] and then she just falls over and sleeps[:D] theres a westie puppy for ya!
