my police dog

    my police dog

We had a rather scary situation last night.  A girl on drugs jumped our fence and ran through our yard screaming while we were gardening.  There were 4 police officers running after her.

Chase, of course, ran at her barking when she jumped the fence.  I was so scared that Chase would bite her.  Although he's never bitten anyone before and he welcomes strangers in when we do, I think that this situation was so strange and scary that none of us knew what to do.  This girl was obviously not all right and I'm sure that it was clear to Chase that she was dangerous/scary/unwelcome/unfriendly in our space.

Anyway, he slowed her down enough that the police were able to catch her.  He didn't put teeth on her or even snap at her...he just kept blocking her route and herding her away from us and towards the side of the yard.  It all happened so quickly that I didn't even have time to react and call Chase off.

I was both proud and relieved.  The last thing I want is for my dog to bite, and I was so happy that Chase didn't.  It sure is strange and somewhat impressive to see your sweet, loves-everyone-and-everything dog protect his property and his people.

That's great, I hope that Tyson would do the same for us.  He LOVES everyone, and we joke that he would just lick an intruder!

It might not be a joke. [:D] I've been outside in front and had a friend of DH, DS or DGS come by and I've just said "He's here - go on in." Max never so much as growls.  He just runs up to get an ear scritch and lick whoever is there. Same with people coming into the yard - the Terminix guy or the pool guy - he just runs out to lick and get scratched.

Maybe he would be able to sense the "shadyness" of a burglar or something?? I *hope*.

Sounds like Chase is a pretty clever dog.

I think Petey would be more like Max or Tyson.  Anyone comes over and he figures they're good for some ear or chest scratching.

Winnie is different.  If she doesn't know the person, she comes and stands right in front of me (often getting under my feet) and if they get too close and she doesn't like it, she'll sit (usually on my foot) with ears up, totally alert, hackles raising, and growl at them.

    Good boy Chase.

I'm firmly convinced that Boomer would bark and growl and snap at an intruder - from the other side of the room. BUT, if a vacuum cleaner or lawn mower ever tried to break in he'd rip it to shreds.

good deal...how did the officers react to Chase?

I know Jetta would do the same thing. Any time someone runs through our yard she barks and makes a beeline for them!! She is 15 pounds of ferocious, overprotective bichon frise!! (of course once she gets near the person she gets scared and rolls over[8D])

Yea, woo hoo. Good Chase, that is awesome. As owners we alsways wonder how they would reacct yet also hope that we never have to fond out. You should be very very proud!
Rory had her first test at 7 months, poor lil thing. I was dating this jerk and he came over in the wee hours of the night, didnt turn on any lights and came drunkeldy walking down the hall. Rory was at the foot of my bed and she started growling real scary and low in her throat. I called out his name, he didnt respond. I pretty much knew it was him so I said, "your scaring Rory, is that you"? The dummy didnt say anything or even think to turn on a darn light, later I found out he was trying to scare me cause he knew I had just watched a scary movie.
Rory flew off of my bed, hauled puppy butt down the hall way and took the biggest chunk outta his shin. He needed 4 stitches and was pissed! He grabbed her and said "do something with your dog" I bent down and said "good girl", that was pretty much the end of that relationship but I was not about to reprimand my girl AT ALL. As a small single girl living alone I couldnt have asked for more from her, and at such a young age. So not only is she a fierce protector but she is a great screener of potential boyfriends!
