    Somewhat serious question about doggie

Hello, I'm new here, but I have an urgent question about my dog. Just recently, he began hacking and vomitting a fluid that is high in mucus. I've been reading up on this on the internet, and they say that it may not be serious, but I need to know what could be his problem. The obvious solution would be to take him to the vets, but it's almost four in the morning here. Crying

There are some 24 houre emergency vet clincs. You could also look them up online, I would give them a call and ask if they think it's urgent to get the dog in or if it can wait till the morning. Even if you call anouther one in a different state at least you'll have some idea of what to do. Even ask what you can do till the morning to keep your dog under your care till the vet opens.

Really, a vet would have to see the dog to know if anything worse is going one. This is just one symtom of many things and untill you get the dog to a vet it's almost imposible to say what it could be.

If you do feed the dog at this time, if it has access to foog, give it only small amouts of food and if it vomits that take the food away. Same with water, only give small amounts and if it doesn't go well with the dog take the water away also.

He's settled down considerably. I've been searching for an all night vet in my area, but the closest one seems to be in the next city. I'm going to call them anyway.

If it gets any worse, where it looks like the dog is suffering plenty a lot of vet clincs are on call. Where the vet has a pager # and you can call at any time during there on call days. The vet I work for does this just in case of an emergency late at night. They leave the pager number on the message machine at the clinic so if someone needs to reach them they can.

He doesn't seem to be stressed anymore. He's exausted, but alert, and still gets excited when I get the leash. I just called a vet, and she said that as long as he wasn't throwing up blood or having excessing diharrhea, that he could wait until morning. I'm still worried, however, and decided to stay up with him until he falls asleep.

Did you just get this dog?  Is it a puppy?  Occasionally dogs vomit mucous.  It's not serious and most vets will say as long as it doesn't happen frequently, it's ok.  Get a vet to define "frequently" though, is the hard part.  One of our dogs vomits about once or twice a month and it's always a yellow frothy liquid.  As long as it's not bright red or dark red/brown, it's just stomach fluid.  Our dog that does this, most likely is just hungry.

My girls will do that too if they are hungry.  In the morning if they run around in the back yard for too long before they come in for breakfast, the will all of a sudden puke up a yellow frothy vomit.

So how is the OP's dog doing this morning?

4 am, mucous-vomit, means the dog's stomach is too empty. Give him a snack and go back to bed. Dogs vomit easily and it rarely means anything serious.
