    After spaying

Daisy got spayed  and hernia removed yesterday afternoon and I picked up daisy at th vet this morning. She was happy when she saw us. Anyway, my question is that she likes to lick her surgery area. Is it ok for her to lick on it?  I am with her all day and will watch her until she is 100% recover so I will not let her have any chance to bother the stitches. I am just wondering if I should stop her licking it ? My vet didnt guve us any antibiotics or pain killer, is it necessary to give the meds to the dogs who got spayed? She went potty once after we took her home and she seemed feel a little bit uncomfortable when she was pooping but she did. Is it normal?  I might worry too much since she is just a little puppy. I'd ask for an e collar for her.  Looks like an upside down lampshade.  If she's licking, she CAN bother the stitches and thats not good.

When Lana was spayed, we were told that she was not allowed to lick her stitches as it might irriate it or cause an infection or even cause the cut to reopen a bit.  We were given an e-collar for her when I picked her up from the vet.

Jasmine had internal stitches, when she was spayed.  I only saw her lick her incision once, but don't know if she snuck in a few licks, during the night.  We never got an e-collar for her, since she pretty much left her incision alone.  She healed up with incident, although, it took a long time for all her belly hair to grow back to it's previous length!

We felt sorry for Bailey after she got spayed and didn't put the e-collar (cone) on her. She licked her incision wide open and we were "watching her all the time" too. We rushed her to an emergency vet hospital where they stapled the wound shut again. This was on day 4 of her recovery (when the wound starts healing and itching more) and we had to start all over at day 1 with 10 days of her wearing the cone. My advice is put a cone on your dog!

And for Heaven's sake don't make her go for walks with it on!  It is just tooo embarrasing for her!

Crusher had an inverted rectum when he was little and had to wear one of those collars.  He would jump around and play in the house but he HATED to go outside.  Poor baby walked into everything, trees, steps, bbq.  And evil us, all we could do was laugh at him.  Side splitting laughter.  He was just so determined that he could still fit through the same places.
