The age thing is important, I think. Little Misty is 1.5 and the second dog we got was 6. He was completely attention starved, due to his background, and just wanted human attention, he did not play at all. He was here for almost six months. I think if we had gotten a puppy, the outcome may have been different. However, I do think Misty is a dog who really enjoys being an only dog and does best that way. Since her "foster" brother went off to his new home this past week, she has relaxed completely--it was a very tense few months for her, trying to compete with him.
Another difficulty here in owning the two dogs was the food and toy thing. Misty can eat pretty much anything, she's got an iron stomach. Also, she enjoys flossies and other chew treats at will. The foster brother had a very sensitive stomach and was on a strict regiment of lamb and rice food with only very particular treats in between. Feeding time, keeping him out of her food, and supervised chewing time for her when he coludn't get at the chewing items, was difficult.
