    Cooling Jackets for my Rotties

I purchased 2 cooling jackets for my 2 furry kids. The boy was pouting because he had just finished training (I think I pushed him a little too hard) and he didn't want to pose for the pic. He was being a pouty boy. And the girl's jacket is still a bit big but she's only 9 months old so I'm hoping she will grow a bit more. They are so cute! Perfect for this gosh awful heat in the summer time!

What a big pouty face!!  [:)
I just found out that the event we're going to next week is OUTDOORS.  Crap!  And I just passed up buying those pre-made cooling towel coats at the last show thinking, we don't have any outdoor events this year.  I bought the cooling bandana thing and a portable misting thing.  Oh please, Gracie was terrified of the mist.  Guess I'll be home-making one of these cooling coats, too.
Did you buy yours from a vendor or online?

I bought them from a friend of a friend. I went up to Md, the past dog show and picked them up from her. She makes them out of shammies and does excellent work. If you would like her # let me know and I'll pass it a long to you. She has various colors and they are all so lovely. I picked the orange colors so that when my Rotties go out in public people will see them as much nicer dogs and  hopefully not attached that stigmatism to them.

I was at a show in MD where they sold something similar but for the price, I didn't have Zoe outside that much in heat and she has the bandanna thing.

What do they put in these to keep them cool?

It's made out of shammie material like what you use to wash cars with? You wet it, wring it out a bit, then put it in a Gal. size freezer bag and then keep it in your frig. If your going somewhere take along a small cooler to keep it in.

Oh, hmm, wonder if I could make one with a shammy.  The ones I saw had some kind of gel or something in them.

I'm sure you could. I'm sure if you go to a Auto Zone you might see a variety of colors. I think I prefer the shammie as compared to a gel being in the cooling jacket. It could bust and the dog might lick it? I don't know they just don't sound as safe as the shammies.

I have a bandana with that gel - I presume it's the same stuff as what's used in those re-freezable liquid ice-packs.  Never saw one in a jacket, though.  The jackets I've seen are made out of what looks like beach towels - same theory as Sandi's jackets, but thicker towel.

Shammies, huh?  How well does it hold the cool temp?  ie, how long does the towel stay cool, or do you just keep doing it?  The beach towels tend to hold more water, so the coolness hangs in longer.

Shammies work very well. They hold the coolness in and are not full of water so the dog does not actually get wet. A friend bought one and he shows his dog. He puts the cooling jacket on his boy while he's waiting to show him. It works very well.

Coincidentally, I went to auto zone this morning to get a shammy to make a jacket for Zoe to wear today at my bf's football game, but they were $8.99 and an ugly yellow, so I held back for now.  I discussed it with people who work there and they felt a cold towel could do just as well... but if the shammy is lighter weight and doesn't feel wet, and holds the cold, it could be better.  I was thinking of making it so the shammy would touch her but since it is an ugly color, I could do the other side using a fabric.  I am going to look to see if I can find one cheaper since I am not sure I will make it effectively.  Also, I forgot to measure my pattern to see which size shammy (chambois) I needed.

I'm not sure how Jen got the Shammie's colored. I can ask but don't know if she will tell me since she makes them to sell. I was under the impression they came in different colors. Did you ask Auto Zone if they had different colors and maybe could order you some? I'll see what Jen tells me...
