Foster Dog Sent on to New Home Today

Well, the six year old male poodle (Teddy) that we got from a byb 6 months ago went on to his new home today.  Originally, we had intended to keep him, but this household was a very poor match for him, and so we searched and found better.  He's in such better condition now than when we got him--he's now housetrained, car trained, leash trained and his health is tons better.  When we got him, his coat was like a dried up brillo pad, when I sent him off today it was as soft as can be.

He's gone to a very quiet home with two retired ladies who are pretty much home all the time.  They have owned poodles in the past and love the breed.  I counselled them ALOT about how stressed he would be for the first month, and that for the first week he'd probably be looking for me when ever he heard a sound.  They seem prepared to be patient and give him the time he needs to settle in.  I do think it's a perfect match, and once he feels safe there and forgets about me, he'll be living the high life.

I feel like a 10 ton weight has been lifted off my shoulders, but at the same time I feel sad knowing that right now he's feeling that I have abandoned him and is undoubtedly searching for me in his new home.  I look forward to the weeks passing and hearing that he has settled in.

What a lovely outcome. They do sound like a great home for him, and major kudos to you for taking such wonderful care of him and preparing him for a long and happy life in his new place!

Sounds like you placed him with love.  I hope he settles in and doesn't look back.

You can rest assure that he will never forget you, becaue you took him in showed him love and affection.  And that they never forget. [:)]  Are they willing to maybe let you visit every once in a while, would you be interested in doing that?

This was absolutely a labor of love for this little dog.  It was very difficult to come to the final decision that it was simply a bad fit, regardless of the amount of love and affection we poured over him in this house.  I have already seen a bit of proof that this was the right decision on this end, as little Misty is totally relaxed this evening, and back to her sweet self, the way she was before Teddy came.  She was a nervous, demanding wreck with him around, and he was a nervous, demanding wreck when she was around.

As for visiting, I plan to visit him a year from now.  I don't want to interrupt his bonding experience with his new moms.
