I did not know that GSD were used at the concentration camps.  How awful that so many years later some sicko would bring up such things.  I just do not understand why some people don't think before they speak.  When I see your Strauss all I see is one handsome dog.  Don't let his ignorance get to you.  You mean everything to your dog and his stupidity means nothing.[]

I would have shrugged my shoulders and made some comment like "ignorance is bliss" and walked away.
Or better yet "my dog can get to the door in 30 seconds, how about you" just to scare him

I've never looked at a GSD and thought "Nazi." Apparantly, you ran into a moron, and unfortunately, he wasn't able to refrain from publicly saying stupid things.

On a different note, this is so strange, but hubby and I had a GSD his name was also Strauss.................... not kidding............

Our Strauss died a few yrs ago but he was a great dog and friend, we miss him so much.
 

Was this guy older?  Is it possible he was of that generation and he really meant, "Oh, one of those nazi dogs!"   There are some terrible sort of random associations for those who grew up with that horror - the sirens American emergency vehicles use is the same the SS vehicles used - and the fears even passed to the next generation, sometimes.

It is true that the Germans used the "Alastian" (as the allies knew the dog at the time) as a weapon of terror in the prison camps in addition to its military and protection duties.  It's not the fault of the breed.  But it also means that someone only thinking of that experience in association with a splendid example of the breed, is not necessarily a "moron."  Just someone who speaks first and thinks later, not thinking about how it might hurt someone.  My mom's like that - it's embarrassing - but she's not a moron, just not interested in catering to anyone's finer feeling.

Okay I wasnt even thinking about the "german" thing.  What a moron... I would be angry over it... I would feel sorry for him and his lack of intelligence.

Herr Drachenberg (That's one of Strauss' many nicknames) is an awesome dog, and he understands almost no english himself.  I decided to train him in german.  There is only ONE other person in my kennel club that trains in German, and that's only because I convinced him to.

His name's Joel, and he has a working line GSD, Anubis.  Strauss and Nubie love each other ^_^  We do sits and downs next to each other on purpose because they like to try and interact, and we're trying to get it across to them that no matter who you're next to, stay means STAY

That's cool that you trained him in German. When I first started looking for a dog I was planning on looking for an Akita until the SPCA said I couldn't adopt one because there are children in the house, I was planning on training it in Japanese, but I ended up getting my GSDxCollie whom I happened to name Anubis.

Ugh...the sheer ignorance of some people really gets to me sometimes.  Did he honestly think that he was going to charm you with that comment?  What a jerk.
 
Realise he was a jerk and move on.  Feel blessed that YOU have the pleasure and company of your beautiful boy and that idiot will never know what that bond is like.

I feel your pain.  I have one of the dreaded bull breeds and have to defend her on almost a daily basis from the ignorant John Q. Public.  The only thing you have to worry about from my Am Staff is her tail and tongue! Just grit your teeth and tell him that not all dogs are like the ones he knows.  What an idiot.
