At a pet store today. I have to go to one of two in town to get rats for my snake. I have to go in there. I can't not feed Mickey because that's starvation. But I was petting the pups because I couldn't help myself. A woman was holding a pug and made a comment along the lines of, "oh this one could have puppies, it's a girl". I sat on the floor a minute and finally asked her if she was wanting to get into breeding. She looked at me with this big light in her eyes, full of hope and wonder and dreams... She said, I don't know, maybe, why? I told her that if she wanted to get into breeding that she should really get a pug from a reputable breeder who knows what they're doing. That she'd know about the parents and they'd have been tested for all the genetic diseases pugs are prone too. That the breeder could mentor her about pugs and the difficulties of breeding. I said you just don't know about this dog's parents. Where they came from, what kind of genetics they have and that pugs are prone to respiratory problems. The light died in her eyes, replaced by a kind of doubt.... I truly hope she thinks long and hard about what I said.
I couldn't bring myself to say go adopt a dog, because she wanted a pug. And I HAVE to go to these stores for rats and I can't be banned... so I didn't say, don't buy this dog. Just don't BREED this dog. She apparently has a pug at home already that she did get from a "breeder". I don't know what kind, I just didn't want to get banned from the store....
I hate puppymills and BYB.
