    breeding for $

Okay, I'm going to bring up the past, but I was thinking about this today and thought that this forum needs some more excitement.

When I was in college, I worked for  a pet supplies store.  One day this woman came in who had a ;pregnant lab that was too thin.  First thing I asked her is... what are you feeding your dog?  She was feeding it Pedigree Adult.  This was my first sign that she had no business breeding.  I explained to her that pregnant dogs need to be on a puppy food (or a good all life stages formula, but puppy food was easier to explain to her).  After much hemming and hawing, I finally got her to buy Diamond Puppy - not the greatest, but better than Pedigree puppy.

Here's the worst part: She wouldn't buy any thing over $20.00 a 40lb bag, because her husband lost his job and...
"that's the reason we bred our lab, to make money."
I also told her to take her it to the vet, but once again..."We don't have money for that."

I let it go, at least content that she was buying a somewhat better food.  Then, a few months later she called and spoke to the store owner.  Apparently, she was having a hard time selling the puppies and told my boss that I told her that she could sell the puppies there!  Of couse my boss knew she was full of it.  My boss explained that it's against franchise policy to sell puppies and that we don't want to be held reliable for the puppies if they are sick.

Later in the week I recieved a phone call from her at work.  She went on and on about how her and her husband have no money.  That they haven't sold a single puppy and that how dare I tell her she can't sell her puppies there when she bought that "fancy" food from us.  She was trying to sell the puppies for what Pet LandCrying was selling labs for.

I eventually just outright told her that quality breeders don't breed for the $, they breed to uphold the breed's standards and that good breeders end up spending more money on genetic testing, food, and vet care than they actually get for the puppy when it's sold.  I continued with..."I know you didn't do genetic testing on the stud or your female.  You didn't even do research, because if you did you would have known this.  That's why no one is buying your puppies, because they can tell you don't know what you're doing."  And hung up.

I hope she learned a valuable lesson.

    ERRRRRrrrrr....

I get so upsett hearing and even seeing this happen. Someone buys a registerd purbreed dog, breed with some random dog of the same breed and poof puppies!

On of my neighbors did this and I was so angry, she thought she could sell her GSD pups for $800, what she payed for her dog, but they didn't sell. Eventuly she sold them for $200 each still making what she thinks is profit and didn't even consider the health of her dog. I even suggested the puppy food to her while the dog was pregnate but she just made up her own thing saying the mom has everything she need in her o turn her regular store brand food into whats good for the pups. I don't even know where she heard that but defently not from anyone that knows anything about breading. I often saw the pups on the street and would put them back in her yard just because I was afrade they would get killed. She didn't even have a place to keep them and left them outside untill she sold them. The mother now is very underweight and has not put on any pound sence the puppies left. she is coming into heat agean an I worrie she will just have more pups. GRRRrrr Why don't these people listen! It never has a good outcome when you breed for profit!

I worked for a lady once who offered stud service with her show line gsds.  One day we got this emaciated bitch who "needed" to be bred because her season was almost over.  The poor thing was so thin you could see her ribs poke out of her when she walks.

Well after a good few minutings of ranting, we gave her a nice bowl of euk w/ chicken and rice, and let her rest the whole weekend with no boy dogs to harass her.  Then we sent her home monday saying Sorry, tried, but no luck [:'(].

Sad thing is, there's no way we could stop the owner from breeding her somewhere else.

I know someone who just got some Mastiffs to breed when they are old enough.  They aren't planning on showing or getting any certification.  They are doing obedience but I don't think they will be going for any titles or anything like that.  No genetic testing.  They want to make money years ago it was Rotts.  Another person I know wants to stud their golden retriever who was bought at a Pet store.  UGH!
ALot of thought needs to go in before people decide to breed their dog and making money shouldn't be a consideration.  That 's greed.  If breeding they should be breeding for the betterment of the breed![;)]

My best friend (and one of the handful of good pet owners I know) has a sucessful Rottweiler bitch. On the lookout for a stud dog we found a gorgeous Rottweiler while driving by a neighborhood. The lady wasnt there but we left herr # and when she called she assured us her dog was AKC and a proven champion. She never could prove any of the titles she claimed to have won with her dog.

And the most outrageous thing was that she wanted half of the litter because thats how "real" breeders did things!!

She said she wanted to get into the breeding 'business' so what was she planning on doing with them, breed brother/sister?!?

You can rest assured my friend did not breed to the stud! In fact she was so shocked she didnt breed her at all, but got semen shipped from one of her breeders studs

Good for your friend Lizzie!!! (love the new sig)

Breeding isn't a money making business, if it's done right.  Good breeders put way more time and money into the pups than they get back from the purchase price.

If Xerxes becomes a finished champion in the show ring, I'm sure I'll get a call or two regarding studding him out.  Rest assured that my *fee* will be either monetary, or first pick.  That is the way that most breeders I know do it.  And, in accordance with PHCA rules, she must be a finished champion as well.  (she better be pretty too, Xerxes has very good taste in the ladies.)
