? For orher rescue's on this forum

On the news last night, Jax's is cutting theirs to three days for cats, five days for dogs that do not have collars, and seven days for the ones that do have tags or collars.

Just to clarify - Jacksonville ACC is asking the city council to amend the city laws so that they can PTS both stray cats and dogs after 3 days if there is no collar on them.  They will have 5 days if a collar is on them even if it's only a piece of rope.  They will get the full 7 days if they have both collar and license on them.   Unfortunately since the HS here went no-kill they are getting 2200-2800 animals a month at the ACC shelter and simply do not have the room or funds to care for these animals.  The sad reality is owner turn-ins are euthanized almost immediately since no hold is mandated by law.  [:o]

Angel, I feel for you and know what an uphill battle you are facing.  I sure hope you can pull this off.  I know you can if based on your level of determination.  Wish I had some way to convince these guys but drawing a blank.  Not knowing the cost of euthansia supplies and personnel - maybe a cost benefit ratio showing it is cheaper to feed a couple extra days to allow rescues a chance and only pay euthansia personnel one day a week?  Don't know if that will work or not but most people will follow the money.

    Good luck and God bless.

Robin, you can be of great help to them by going over and taking pictures of the adoptable ones, sending them to rescue's. Here is a list of rescue's I use that are 501 (C) 3 and very reputable.

I emailed the Shih Tzu rescue this morning because I saw that poor little thing on TV.

This is how I got started. It took some convincing to get them to allow me to send out these pictures to these rescue's and to allow these rescue's to come pull the adoptable ones. They mandated that any of the rescue's to pull the pets had to prove 501 (C) 3, spay and neuter prior to adoption. This was the only way they allowed them to pull. Approach the director at your local ACC to see if they would be willing and receptive to this idea.
I know you can do it. I started out by myself and now have a group of people to help take pictures etc. I started out doing this twice a week and now we have someone on a daily basis. I implore you, give it a go.

God Bless you also. And thanks, I am going to need all the strength I can muster to continue this battle for a better cause.

forpaws- your story about the border collie hit home for me.  My Zoey (border collie mix) was picked up by the ACO and deemed vicious.  She was on the long walk to be euthanized when a dog savy (like you) vet tech took a second look at her and saved her life by getting her in rescue.  My heart hurts when I think of how close she was to being put to sleep- she is such a loving dog!

Our stories are so similar- I imagine lots of herding dogs get put down because people don't understand them.  It is so sad...

Sandra, there are so many dogs in this shelter that are not given a chance because they don't understand them. I am so glad your Zoey was rescued like this boy was. I hate seeing all the destruction and ignorance, but hope to educate them as we go along in a different mind set for the future.

    Robin,
Here is a copy of the letter I recieved from Jax's ACC center this morning. I am sure you can jump on the band wagon too to help.

Hi Angel: Your e-mail was forwarded to me for response.  I'm the Rescue Coordinator with the City of Jacksonville's Animal Care & Control Center. First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to assist your community animal shelter.  It's a very commendable thing you're doing and I'm sure the folks at Putnam County appreciate the time and effort you're putting in to save some of the animals. Jacksonville Animal Care & Control works very closely with numerous breed rescue organizations from all over the southeast, and we are considered by many rescuers to be one of the most "rescue-friendly" shelters in the area.  We provide vaccinations, diagnostic testing and spay/neuter surgery for all the animals we release to rescue at a very discounted fee. Our vet staff evaluates each animal entering the shelter; if the animal appears to be non adoptable due to behavior, health or for other reasons, they place a "rescue hold" on the dog's computer file and I generate a report from our software program each day.  This provides the list of animals in need of rescue.  I then contact the appropriate breed rescue organization and arrange for the animals to be released to these organizations once they're ready to be picked up. While we currently have well over 300 organizations on our current list, we can never have too many reliable rescue organizations to turn to when an animal is in need of rescue.  Please feel free to refer rescue organizations to me via e-mail and I'll be happy to send them one of our rescue applications. Thanks again for all you're doing to help homeless animals, and for taking the time to write to our facility!  Renee Kinsey

[linkhttp://www.news4jax.com]www.news4jax.com[/link] has the article in which we are discussing that kind of corresponds with what I am facing with our ACC shelter also.

    Angel,

I very much appreciate your trying to 'nudge' me to do more with ACC here but I am happy with my involvement level.  My heart and emotional capacity are usually full - anymore and i would sink into another depression.  Plus i must balance a full-time job and a dd's activity needs with my two fosters and my own animals.

On several occasions I have referred dogs to rescues that were already aware of them and had been in contact with Renee (ie, a visla several weeks ago and a brittany this week).  ACC here is very good about posting pics on-line within hours of an animal's arrival at the shelter.  In spite of what the news may show - most of the people working there care and do their best.  They do not have a problem with adopting out pitbulls, etc and do their best for all the animals they see.
Unfortunately the best use of the limited resources available IMHO should be used toward spaying/neutering campaigns such as those run by FCNMHP and SpayJax.

Sorry to disappoint you and hope you will still think well of me.

Take care of yourself and good luck.

Robin, I don't think any less of you. Only you know your limitations. I commend you for that.

I am going to speak with your ACC shelter and see if they can give me some helpful hints on how to go about changing our ACC's minds and better the shelter. I did notice from the pictures, that their shelter is immaculate, unlike ours. Sorry to say.

You just helped me and didn't even know it. With the  FCNMHP and SpayJax. Gives me an idea on a follow up. Thanks!

Wow Angel. That is so sad. What a nightmare to deal with. Good for you volunteering your time and working to make a change.
