Which breed?

This is really bugging me. I'm seeing it all over the board. It's TERRIER, not "terrior."
Sure, it's okay to make fun by spelling it that way, but that's not actually the way it is spelled.

Thank you for your attention. This has been a Public Service Announcement. [:D]

If you like weims(checks to see your username) then an older rescue(5+) might be what you're looking for.  Mine only slobbers when the word cookie is mentioned ;o)

I agree with a terriOr........just kidding terrier i mean.  I love me some terrier's.[:)] I have two a cairn and a westie they definately love to alert you when someone comes around but love every one.  If you are looking for a large dog why not a golden retriever or a lab.  These are really smart dogs.  Let us know what you choose[8|]

I am going to be honest....realisticly there is not a single breed that meets your criteria. There are specific dogs, but not a specific breed.

I would recommend going down to a shelter and talking to them about what dogs they have there.  A nice adult large breed mutt will do the trick.

You mention wanting a CALM dog, I don't know that terriers would qualify.  I may be wrong, but they aren't calling them terrors for nothing.  It really depends on what your definition of calm means in the end.

My suggestion, get a good all breed book that describes temperaments and each breeds individual needs on exercise and care, etc.  Then attend several all breed dog shows. Talk to some breeders and see what breeds appeal to you.  My book suggestion is "Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds" by D. Caroline Coile Ph.D. for about $20.  This link has a good descrption and critiques of the book:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764157000/ref=ord_cart_shr/104-0018699-1560751?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance&n=283155

Just my opinion.[:)] Good luck in your hunt!

Hello.  In response to Bullterrors, I too have a red doberman and she is chewing up everything!  Just this morning, she chewed up the brand new pair of grooming gloves that I bought for her.  She also likes to chew the heels out of socks and the plastic off of new shoelaces.  She is a couch potato though.

Wow! My dobie has never chewed up anything except the occasional toy. She's one of the best dogs I've ever had. Even as a puppy she wasn't a chewer and I had her house broken within 2 days of bringing her home. Maybe I just got lucky (for once LOL).

I agree with Mic. I think a mutt dog would be great! To meet the right one that fits in your family you can also check Petfinders athttp://www.petfinder.com . Lots of folks here have gotten great dogs on petfinder.

Terriers are not calm! They are bouncy bouncy busy busy for the most part! A friend of mine from Scotland said the other day, "Anything small and white and a terrier, it's too much for me!" He has a black border terrier back in Scotland.

[:)] I have a Miniature Pinscher, and while she is not classified as a terrier - they should be!  Hyperactive, never ending energy!  She's a blast, but it's also like having a permanent two year old in the house!  I know not all dogs of a specific breed are going to toe the line on expected temperament, but all the terriers I have ever met are the typical terrors!  Got to love them though![:D]
