Puppy Class

    Puppy Class

Sky starts puppy class in a couple weeks; I was wondering what will be the main focus in this class?  And is there anything I can start teaching her to prepare her for class?  We#%92re currently working on getting her use to a leash and what her name is.

Teaching her to use the leash will be a big help at puppy class, since she'll need to be on one. If I remember right with Max, they learned a few tricks and got socialized with the other people and dogs. At one class, we traded dogs and walked around and all the dogs did surprisingly well with that one. Have fun at class. [:)]

Mirelle graduated puppy class about a month ago, and we had fun there. She didn't get into class until she was 4 months old, so she already knew Sit, Down, Come, basic things, and that was helpful. In puppy class, I also taught her Watch Me ( very helpful one; I wish I would have taught that to my now-3-year-old dog, would have helped her in her training now, a lot!) along with heeling ( Let's Go) and other stuff. We got to do a stairs, jump, and tunnel, and played  a few other games. They also did the one where you switch handlers, and someone else walked your dog. That worked out ok I think.

I don't know that there is really anything special your dog needs to learn before class, but it was nice for me, that Mirelle already knew what to do  at home, before she had to do it in a distracting environment like the puppy class. Have fun! [:)]

I took April when she was a baby, she knew nothing when she went and did very well there. I enjoyed it as did she.

When Max was in puppy class, we didn't do the walking other people's dogs, we actually passed the puppies. You had to pick your dog, and pass it to the family beside you. This wasn't so hard with the small dogs, but with Max, and the golden that was in the class, let's just say it was all the more fun.

Before puppy class, Loki knew sit and was pretty good at down. But most of the puppies didn't really know any commands and they all did fine. I agree with Stephanie that "Watch me" is a really good one to teach. When your puppy is distracted in class, it's great to be able to redirect them to look at you.

It will be very basic, but I think leash work, mainly heel, is important. And recall/come. You'll be surprised at how well the puppies can learn at a young age. Have fun!
