How to get dog to sleep in bedroom?

Our 11 month old cockapoo sleeps in his crate every night in our spare bedroom.  We would really like him to start sleeping in our bedroom, either in our walk-in closet or in the corner of our bedroom on a dog bed/pillow.  Any suggestions on how to go about introducing him to this change in sleeping areas?  I want to avoid him waking up in the middle of the night and either start chewing on something he shouldn't etc.  Last night I did have him sleeping in our ensuite bathroom (had a baby gate in the doorway so he couldn't leave the bathroom).  He was okay, no whining or barking but I know if I didn't have the baby gate there he would end up jumping on the bed (which myself and DW don't want) or running around the bedroom.  We normally have our bedroom door closed during the night so he would be in our bedroom until one of us got up and left.  Thanks for any suggestions.

Why don't you just move his crate into your bedroom?

We want to start getting to a point where we won't need the crate for night time sleeping anymore.  Plus it's a big crate and we really don't have the room in our bedroom to put it in there.

I think if you just put the bed there and tell him "go on your bed" he will.  And if he gets up and starts sniffing around the room just use him name and tell him, "go on your bed.".  He will get the idea pretty quickly.  If he comes on the bed, tell him to get down and tell him to "go on your bed".

The only problem I see with this is that I know with Willow she never sleeps in the same spot all night.  She might start on her bed, get hot and move to the floor or another area entirely.  I think if he's shut in and isn't comfortable on his bed and wants to move around to a move comfortable area that's when you're going to have the problem.

Example--We never shut our bedroom door when she's in there but today I had the A/C on and wanted to keep the room cool.  So, she slept for about an 1 1/2 or so with me in there and then once she wanted to leave the room, I heard pawing at the carpet and sneezing and all kinds of commotion.  When she's not shut in she quietly leaves and it's not a problem.

I wouldn't mind him walking around our bedroom getting comfortable during the night.  At this point I don't trust him enough to leave our bedroom door open so he can go wander  the upstairs.

I know but, what I mean is he might not be able to get comfortable in there.  I guess what I'm saying is maybe you might want to think about waiting until he's safe to be upstairs so the door can be open.

Edited to add--He's probably not going to wander much, Willow usually just goes right outside the door and plops down.  You'll see, he'll figure out all his "spots" and go to the same ones all the time.

Maybe I will wait a few more months until we get comfortable enough to trust him enough to have the run of the house.  Maybe one weekend when myself and the wife can afford not to get that much sleep, we'll try him out in our bedroom with the door closed and see how that goes.  Thanks for the tips.

That sounds like a good idea, see how he does.  Good luck.

Hopefully it'll work.  I'm just getting a little anxious and a little ahead of myself wanting him to get to the point where we don't need to worry about what he's doing when he runs up the stairs or in a room by himself.  But then again he's only 11 months so can't expect too much from him yet in that area.

I'd just move the crate into the bathroom, leave the crate door open and your bedroom door open. We eliminated closed-door crating overnight around age 6mo, and still now at 14mo our dog voluntarily sleeps in his crate at least half the time, unless he wants the coolness of the floorboards for a while. We had the dog bed outside of the crate for a while but apparently it's not the same - he likes sleeping in the crate, maybe your dog prefers it too.

We just made this transition ourselves! Marley now will sleep on his bed in our room...and sometimes goes into his crate. I actually asked a dog trainer on this one! She said...bring the crate into your room. He is a pack animal. He needs to know that when we come into this room...the pack sleeps. She said gradually go from that to having the crate open. Finally, introduce the bed. It took baby steps, but Marley pretty much sleeps on his own bed now! HTH
