Collar alternatives?

    Collar alternatives?

Today when DH got home from work, Izzy had managed to get her collar into her mouth.  There is no telling how long she had it that way, but he said she was thrashing around when he got here.  She has done this once before when I left a brand new collar she got too loose but DH was here to help her that time.  He had to cut it off.  I made sure to put this one on much tighter b/c I didn't want this to happen again so I have no idea how she got it in her mouth.

The point is, she really needs to wear some sort of a collar in my opinion.  I always put a harness on her when we go places and she rarely escapes, but I really want her to have identification just in case.  Min Pins are known as crafty escape artists.  You just never know, and she is especially destructive recently....she is 8 months old....which I think is part of the reason she was trying to chew on her collar in the first place.  We live in a busy city and I fear that if she ever escaped and had no ID that we might never find her.

Is there something safer I should be looking for her to wear?  Would a breakaway collar have been safer for her in this situation or are there other collars that I should look into?  Should I not even worry about her wearing a collar?  The one she had was leather with a normal buckle.

EDA: BTW, Izzy seems to be doing fine.  I think it upset DH and I more than her.  I would be devastated if my pet strangled them self from doing this so I am just trying to figure out a good alternative.

Would there be anything wrong with her wearing a harness full time? I mean I wouldnt have her without a collar even inside the house. If she ever got away from the house she would have no ID.

My Collie is also a big escape artist so I always keep her collar on incase she ever decides to go on a stroll without us.

I'm asuming she is not crated when you are gone, or am I wrong? If she is crated, I think that would do away with the need for a collar when you aren't home since she couldn't go anywhere. Otherwise, if she is small enough to wear a cat collar, how about a cat safety stretch collar for when you are not around? I think if she tried to pull it off, it would just stretch over her head and come off, although i'm not entirely sure if that's how it works. I guess you could try it though.

She is crated when I am not home.  She is totally untrustworthy when we are not here to supervise.  The last trial run she got to have she chewed the blinds up on the front window.

I think I will look at cat collars too.  That is a good idea.  She could probably wear a large cat collar.  Since they are outdoors then a lot w/o supervision there are probably more breakaway options.  I am not shure about her wearing a harness all the time.  Although we haven't had any trouble with chaffing yet, her fur is very thin and I have noticed that her harness rubs her in some of those really thin spots a little more than a collar would.

    Premier makes breakaway collars.

The best collar is no collar, IMO.

I dont think your supposed to have a collar in a crate anyway, just in case.  Bailey never has her collar, neither did Kayla... only when we would have people over or were going out.
