Crates for Air Travel

For those who have flown with their dogs before, are there airline specific crates? Since we're moving, we're going to need to fly on Christmas and therefore we need a crate for Lana. I'm not sure how to go about looking for one that fits airline standards.

I haven't flown with my puppy, but my cat did come with us from England when we moved to Toronto. I searched through so many crates and the best one I found is the Pet Cargo. They come in different sizes and are called things like Pet Cargo 500, Pet Cargo 600, Pet Cargo 700, etc. to indicate different sizes. They're pricey, but really great; they have ventilation on all sides, easy-release wheels, a detachable compartment to carry things like leashes, papers, the wheels, etc. Now the puppy uses it as her normal crate.

Hmm, in my opinion crates specifically for travel are kind of a waste of money. Your regular plastic crate will be fine, as long as the dog can stand up, turn around and lay down comfortably. You should go to your airlines site to double check on size requirements. The first time we traveled with our first pup (cockapoo) we had to spend a ton of money on a bigger crate because the crate was too small

Check with the airlines. I'm not 100% sure but I think some might actually have crates that you can hire instead of buying.

From the looks of your pictures, you have a small dog, well, I took my dog on board with me on Continental Airlines in a soft carrier. The carrier was FAA approved but it wasn't like a kennel, it is a dog bag that zips up entirely, can be used as a back pack or shoulder bag and they didn't do any sort of measuring or anything - as long as it fit under the seat, it was ok. My puppy was 8 lbs at the time of travel. They didn't even look at our medical papers. It cost $85 each way, flat rate. Oh, and they only allow 2 dogs in the cabin per flight so you have to make a reservation.

This was the deal when I had my little one (GSD) flown from Frankfurt to Wisconsin. Lufthansa just used the crate that she was used to. If I remember correctly, it did need to be an actual crate and not just a wire cage. Definitely check with the carrier to make sure though.

Wow! Thanks for all the info! December will be the first time ever we've flown with a pet so we're pretty much in the dark about it. I appreciate everyone's help!
