    Dog bones

    Hi,
I have tried to give my dog bones as chew toys, but he gets the runs afterwords. I do not cook them and they are straight from the butcher. I have tried nuckle, marrow and rib bones. They all seem to upset his stomach. is there any other chews that are safe that I can give him.
    Thanks!!
    Mary Ann

Not that I've found so far Mary Ann, I have the same problems w/ my guys, it makes me crazy, did you try bully sticks?

Sometimes the marrow in bones can upset a dogs stomach.  If all of those make him sick, you might have to stick with comercial chew toys.

I recently brought a bag of Zuke's edible bones,
    Maybe you could try that.....[:)]

    Hi Debbier,

He likes bully sticks, but they only last about 1 half hour. I am looking for something that will take him longer to eat!!!

You could try the marrow bones again but this time with the marrow scooped out.  Just use a spoon and it'll come right out!  The marrow itself is very rich and doesn't agree with most dogs.  Slick will chew on one of these for hours!

how about a kong toy? you can stuff it with something that doesn't upset his stomach.
Have you tried any bones other than COW bones? maybe he just can't handle beef.

I've always liked nylabones. I got one for my dog that would eat rawhide in minets and the nylabone didn't even seen to dull. They don't break apart very easy and are made to withstand even the strongest chewers. They come in different sizes so you could get one that fits your dog. Nylabone as maked etable chew bones but thoes don't seem to last as long as there plastic ones.

Yup my Rory has the same exact problem. I used to watch my dad feed his dogs the biggest hugest bones and have no problems but with Rory it looks like her innards exploded all over the backyard if she gets even the tiniest bones. I think its the bone marrow that is to rich. Plus she is the biggest chewer EVER so I knew I had to find something quick!
Her all time favorite is cow hoofs and they dont break off in shards so they are healthy but they can stink after some time. She also likes those nylabones, they are hard plastic that she cant really penetrate but they are flavored so she loves chewing on them. These are different from the compressed rawhide or compressed flavored edible ones, you'll see the diffreence at the store. Also the plastic bones with the littel nubbies on them she likes and the tire toys stand up to her chewing. When she was a puppy I caught her chewing on a brick because it was the hardest thing she could find poor thing.

Have you tryed lamb offcuts  or maybe pork bones as some breeds of dogs can have beef intolerance (alergic to beef protein). I know with my baby when he was a pup as soon as I gave him beef it went straight through him although he can have marrow bones now but for 12 months I wouldn't give him any beef. Or what about raw chicken carcases dogs love them.

Oh I wish I could give Rory those, she loves them so much but they really tear at her tummy. No pigs ears, lamb, or chicken, its just to rich. Oh and those greenies are like feeding her a laxative, yuck! Its more of a issue of trying to find chew toys I think instead of treats. As for using treats maybe you should stick with the regular Iams grain treats, none of those doggy jerky or hightly processed treats. Liver treats are the best but like someone mentioned are a bit more costly!
