    Angel help baby bird!

    Hi Angel
This little bitty bluejay is on my patio all day long, we don't have any strays in my area, we do have hawks and fox, but this is his second night, he can run and flutter, yesterday when DH was walking the hoodlums he spotted the baby bird and the older jays swooped so he thought all was well, we know to leave them alone, well all day today he has been on my patio looking into my sun porch, he is too cute. I can go out and talk to him and even take the dogs out he won't scamper unless the dogs get too close which I don't let them, tonight he is solo I put out bird seed and water, and some peanuts which brought the big jays back, so just leave him right?

I would pick him up and put him in a tree. If you can find his nest, all the better. His parents will feel safer feeding him and he will be safer.

Don't believe that old wives tail about birds "smelling" you on their young and abandoning them. Most birds, except vultures, cannot smell a thing [:)].

No Beck I know the touching is not true, it's so amazing since I last posted his mom has been down, I guess she is right above my patio and that's why he is standing there, and moved him into the bush, because when I put the seeds down for him the friggin squirrels came, and she must of gotten nervous, it's funny she didn't come down while I was out there once. Really good mommy.

Robins and other songbirds kick their babies out of the nest, and then hang around and feed them. When you find a baby bird like this, leave him alone because he is NOT lost or abandoned. Just entering another stage of life.

I don't know if you were asking me or the other Angel. But what Jean said was right on. Usually the mother comes back to feed them. Last year I ahd found 3 Kildear(spelling) running through the yard. They run so fast they look like little mice. They don't fly much. So my kids were going crazy and Sara was tring to lick them to death I put them in a small box in the yard and sure enough mom came and got them. They wont eat what you give them unless they are a little older. Mom should be feeding this one. I'm sure she will be around.

in NH it's actually illegal to "help" a baby bird if you know the parents are around. He's a fledgling

Yep, all my life. I think we had a thread on bird watching in NDR at one point...

I also worked at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle in the aviary. [:D]

I love my birds outside, I have a large common ground area after my backyard w/ a stream at the bottom. We have so many, and there's one song bird I don't know  who or what it is but it lights up my heart.
