Any dog groomers on board?

    Any dog groomers on board?

This is being discussed on another board and I'm hoping that we have some dog groomers on board who can answer this question. Some people have mentioned using Head and Shoulders dandruff shampoo on their dogs. I did some research and it shows that the main ingredient in it can cause blindness in dogs. I posted that information but some people have stated that their vets recommend using H and D and that human shampoos are safer to use than dog shampoos. Now if I'm not mistaken, dog skin is thinner than human skin and I think the vets are giving misinformation to dog owners. Some people are bathing their dogs once a week and I would think if you are bathing with H and D, you are actually exacerbating the problem and causing more flakies. I would love to hear from some dog groomers on this subject. Thanks!!

I personally wouldn't use any dandruff shampoos on my dog becauses I have seen some of the effects that it can cause. I wouldn't ever tell people that dog shampoo was more harmful than people shampoo. I do use (human) baby shampoo at the shop if we do run out of tearless.

Years and years ago the vet reccomended we used Selsun Blue for Candy for her skin problems and it made it 10x worse! Her skin bubbled and swelled up for about a week after we used it! Of course we rinsed it off well too- something in the ingredients she was highly allergic to. We went to a different vet after that.

I wouldn't reccomend bathing once a week either(with shampoo that is)- dries out their skin way too much.  Daisy gets a "sponge bath" when she comes in from the grass with just a rag and warm water due to her envronmental allergies and that doesn't affect her skin.

Edited to add: Meilani I LOVE your signature! They are all adorable!

I use J&J baby shampoo but never heard using Head and SHoulders was good.  I am not a groomer though.  Also, I bathe approx. once a month.  My bf did use a dandruff shampoo once on her but nothing happened.

hello, I am a small groomer in Mass. I use Oster shampoo. Which you can buy right at Petco. I love it so far. I have dogs that have had itching problems, never itch again. The thing is to lather good, rinse extra well. Even my own skin feels great. I have been trained to never use human shampoo. I also believe not to shampoo a dog to often. Depending on the dog and there coat type. Once every two or three months. I do have some that come more often. They are tring to clear up previous conditions. Or if the dog gets into alot of dirt, mud, tar, pine pitch etc.. Every case is different. The best thing to do is find the one that works for your dogs.
    well good luck!!

My dobe had trouble with doggie dandruff and we've finally solved the problem with a food that works for us.

However, when we were trying to figure everything out I was using Vet Solutions Aloe and Oatmeal shampoo.  I LOVE the smell - it smells like coconuts - and it's nice to work with.  I was also using a topical spray for dry skin/coat.

A trick I learned from the SPCA is to dilute the shampoo with water before applying - it helps it spread easier and it's less "gunky".

    Hi Meilani [:)]

I think Bunni did the litmus test for PH on dog and human shampoos...varied brands..not anything with heavy duty stuff in it....like dandruff shampoos. I believe her findings were that they all had the same PH levels...meaning they'd not likely cause a problem on dogs or people or vice versa.

Did the ingredient cause blinding if it got into the dogs eyes? If so that'd very likely be the result for a person as well. If it's something absorbed thru the skin tho that'd be really worrisome.

I only use hypoallergenic, tearless shampoo on any dog's face, unless there's a severe flea infestation, BUT.....

Yes, I use Head and Shoulders on some dogs. I use Selsun on Emma, occasionally (if she's having yeast issues). Some dogs' flaking and itching just needs that extra help, and for some strange reason, owners will switch shampoos before they'll switch diets. Paying for a $30 bath every week is so much  cheaper than $30 a bag dog food, doncha think?

I am probably a horrible dog owner but I used to use J&J baby shampoo and the vet suggested I only use dog shampoo b/c human shampoo was too strong for dogs.  Then I heard something about using Dawn kitchen soap b/c that is what they use on birds when there are oil spills b/c it cuts oil and is sensitive to their skin.  I barely ever acutally bathe either of my dogs b/c they really just don't need it, but when I do, that is what I use!  [&:]  Neither of my dogs have ever had any sort of reaction to it whatsoever.  I am sure I will get in trouble for that and this is probably just as good a time as any to change if that is the case....
BTW: I also love your new sig!

EDA: I am in no way a dog groomer.  Just thought I would throw in my [sm=2cents.gif]!  [;)]
