There comes a point when they would have to decide whether it would be better to work at Walmart or participate in the suffering.

I think everyone is making very good points here. This is a good, constructive discussion.

But, well....working at very low-wage Walmart with no benefits and a company that rapes the economy of small towns ....truck drivers make a much better living than any Walmart employee, I can tell you that!!

Not only are puppy mills inhumane, but when you buy from them, you don't know what you're getting, (the genetic background) and you don't know the dogs history, maybe its parents had some disease. And its very sad, because breeders are expensive, and many people, no matter how much love a dog is worth can't pay a thousand dollars. And not only that, but it is sad in pet stores seeing pets locked in 4 x 4 cages all day (or less room!)!

I agree and I better understand your point, now.

In most cases breeders are cheaper than the pet store puppies, especially if you're looking for a pet quality dog.  Not to mention that there are breed rescues out there as well.  You may have to drive a few extra miles but it is well worth the peace of mind to know that the pup you have came from a good place.  And if the breeder doesn't ask you to fill out an application....unless you know that person well, I wouldn't buy from that particular breeder.

I've seen purebred dalmations and siberian huskies at the Sherman Animal Shelter. Cost of adoption, $44. Includes adoption, rabies vacc, and spay/neuter at one of the supporting vets.
