    Chihuahuas and Golden retrievers?

    Hi,
Am newbie here, and I thought this would be a good time to mention my dilemma...

I have recently inherited three long-coat chihuahuas.  Two are 5-6yrs old and one is 1 year old (1 dog and two bitches).  However I desperately desperately want a golden retriever.  I know chihuahuas are reknowned for their possessiveness and so believe they will not be well suited to introducing a new dog in their environment... especially one of a larger breed.

However I really really want to know if anyone has actually had any past experience of introducing dogs to their, already settled, chihuahuas? and in particular would be interested in any success stories?

I hope there are some out there

    Thanks :)

First, Welcome to the forum. Sorry nobody responded to your post quickly.
I cannot tell you about Goldens and Chi's getting along, but I CAN tell you about a 3lb 20z Pom that lived with BIG dogs until he passed away. That is another story in itself. But the big dogs are all or the majority are at least 60+ Lbs each with one 45 pounder and a 10lb dog. They all got along very well. On occassion the Pom would throw one of those "I'm a 180lb Rotti attitudes" and I would have to interveen. Certainly monitor them when they are all together so no worries. Each have different needs and wants. You deal with each on there level and things do go smoothly. But one does have to monitor little dogs and big dogs when they are together to make sure no one is injured accidently or stepped on.
Now, I have two 10 pounders with all 60+ lb dogs living in tight quarters. Yeah, it can be work, but worth it in my book.
I never leave the little guys unattended around the big boys in the house. When I leave the home for ANY length of time, they are all crated. Just for their safety. ALL. This way I get piece of mind.
I hope this answered some of your questions. And I do hope you certainly stick around.
    Again,
    Welcome!
And BTW, if you have not already posted any pic's of your newly adopted fur kids, that is what we love around here and it IS part of your admission here.![sm=lame.gif] And if you HAVE, show me the link so I can see your fur kids~ I.... I mean WE love pictures of fur kids!

I know the question is whether the chihuahuas will accept the golden, but if they will accept any big dog, it's gotta be an easy-going golden!

If I were you, I would look for a puppy or a young dog (under a year). That way, the puppy wouldn't be as intimidating (because of its size) as a larger dog.  However, you will stil need to monitor all of them together VERY carefully. A puppy might accidentally hurt the Chis.

i had researched chi's as I was thinking adding one to our dog family of english bulldog and golden mix.  My research found that chi's do not like other breeds, I gave up the idea.  However, I meet a lady with 3 breeds, including a border collie, a chi and a another medium dog and she said all was well with the 3.

But I would think, a golden would have the best chance of integrating.  ANd yes goldens are gorgeous.  My mixed breed has that wonderful golden heart, heart of gold.

    Hi again,

Thank you for the replies, they have been helpful.  I think, for now, I shall concentrate on the chihuahuas.

Thank you forpaws for the advice about posting pictures.  I have just created a new post in 'anything and everything' just to introduce myself... some of the pictures worked but not all of them i'm afraid... will try again another time :)

    GW :)
    xx.
