Do you line your dog food container??

Do you put your dry food, bag and all into your food container?

Or do you line it with a trash bag then pour it in?

Or do you clean the container and pour the new bag in?

I put it in a large rubbermaid container.

I picked up some cool containers at Target that have a scoop on the top.  I do wash the container between fill ups. I dump the new food in a clean dry container not in the original bag.  But I personally wouldn't line with a trash bag.  I think a nice Clean plastic container is fine.  I wouldbe afraid of moisture build up and molding of food if stored in  a container with a garbage bag.

Actually, according to the Whole Dog Journal, the first one is right.

I buy small bags of food, I have small dogs, and I keep it in a large glass container with a tight fitting lid.  It's a giant version of the kind of container with the lid that's tilted towards the front, like we bought penny candy from when we were kids.

The guy at the mom and pop size store where I buy my dog food tells me to never store food in a plastic (rubbermaid) container.  He said because the container surface is porous to a certain extent, that the oils from the kibble can be absorbed into the plastic surface and, eventually, grow bacteria.  I don't know if there's anything to that, I just thought I'd share his wisdom.

That makes sense, I probably wouldn't have thought of it though. Thanks for sharing!

Is is bad that I just keep the food in the original bag? I fold down the bag, clip it, and store it in a cabinet..... Also, it's never bigger than a 4 lb bag, I'm thinking it lasts about a month for my Shih Tzu.

Willow what is THE WHOLE DOG JOURNAL's reasoning behind this?

I have dogs on three different foods so the foods are all kept in the original bags.  Normally they are all kept in a sealed container - right now I'm still in the process of moving and not set up to do that (I don't know why, but I keep forgetting to grab the food container that is at the old house still [8|] ).  Ben's food is kept seperately in its own container, as is the cat food.

I pour the food into containers aswell.  Large containers with thick sides and tight lids so that mice can't get in.  I keep the food at the bottom of my pantry in the back[:)]

Blue's food is still in the bag it came in I just roll it down and put a clip on the bag. For the cats, Mocha's food is in the bag of food it came in stuck in a rubbermaid container and Eli's food is just been poured in the container. I do clean Eli's container whenever I place new food in there.  Tigger's 25lb bag of food is in a huge garabage can still in the bag I just fill a tube for food and refill the tube each month.

I keep my dogs food in the bag and then put it in one of the big containers.  I clean it with each new bag in case anything spilled out while i was scooping out the food.
