    Registering and Naming

    Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the whole puppy registration thing. If I get my puppy from a breeder that does not register her dogs, can I register the puppy myself or is it something only a breeder can do? Now if I get my puppy from a breeder that already regsitered the puppy and I get all the papers and stuff, can I still name my puppy to whatever I want or do I have to use the name the breeder picked out? I'm confused about how the whole thing works.

    Newbie,

If the breeders dogs are not registered then your puppy will not be registered or have the ability to be registered.

The breeder must have registered parents iin order for your puppy to have registration papers.

If you choose a breeder who does register their dogs and the pups paper work has not been sent in then you have the right to name the dog what you wish to. Of course many true breeders do like to have their kennel name listed on the papers but you can do the rest what you want unless they are working with a theme and then they usually will register the dog and you buy it already named.

Hmm lol...I'll try this one...AKC only is what we'll start with...

IF you buy a puppy and are given the 8 1/2 x 11" normal sized paper that had "boxes" which you fill out to register it for $15...the breeder has NOT registered the puppy to herself or anyone else. The puppy will be registered to whomever fills out the form...with whatever name that person puts into the boxes that say 'name of dog" or whathaveyou. You have like 6 months or 12 months I forget which before you incur late fees for registering.

IF you are sold a puppy and receive a half sheet long narrow paper with purple or orange border...THAT is a registration CERTIFICATE...the dogs name is what it is and cannot be changed without a form being filled by the BREEDER, and the proper fees being paid. IF the puppy has been bred or has a title...the name cannot be changed ever...IF the puppy has changed hands more than once...i.e. breeder sold to someone who reg'd it then they repossessed the dog...transferred reg to their name, then sold the pup to you...the name CANNOT be changed.

IF you are given a puppy with NO registration papers with AKC...and neither parent had them either...you cannot do ANYTHING but get an ILP number which will allow you to compete in obedience or performance events but NOT show, and NOT register any puppies sired or out of...that puppy, there will also be NO pedigree available. IN SHORT...BOTH PARENTS MUST BE REGISTERED WITH FULL REGISTRATIONS WITH AKC...AND THE LITTER SUBMITTED FOR LITTER REGISTRATION...for "full" papers to even begin to be issued.

IF your puppy's breeder HAS the AKC registration CERTIFICATE for both sire and dam..and is in good standing with the AKC they can submit the litter for registration I think up to a year after it's born....and receive paperwork with which to register the puppies...tho late fees will apply.

I'm not a breeder, but the way I understand it is that you can make the "call name" whatever you want...is that right?

WOW.....thanks guys. All the info was very informative and helpful! Now, how important is having my dog AKC registered if I do not plan to show the dog? And will I be able to travel with my dog if the dog doesn't have papers?? I mean like travel on planes and to different countries and stuff.....

All the AKC pedigree paper is for is to let you know a little bit about the ancestors. It doesn't matter if your pup has papers or not when it comes to traveling all you have to worry about when traveling with your pup is health and vaccination record you need before traveling.

So I have to dogs that are pure breed and got papers to register with on both of them.  On Harley we paid I think $10 and registered him.  I still have the papers but haven't registered Izzy yet.  They are both fixed.  Is there really any reason to register them if I have no intentions of breeding or showing them?  It is just pure laziness and on my list of things to do but I just wonder how necessary it really is?

You don't NEED to register them unless you plan on some sort of regulated competition - conformation, obedience, rally, agility, etc.  Otherwise, it's just a piece of paper.  [:)]

Registering with SOME body that is reputable and keeps records and does not issue papers based upon how much money you send them...etc is one of the things you look for in a REPUTABLE BREEDER. Why are they breeding at all if they are not interested in maintaining a line for some purpose or another? If they do not register their dogs, at least their BREEDING dogs...what assurance do you the buyer have as to their ability to generally keep paperwork and know who is who's sire etc? None.

The call name is just whatever name you call your dog, nothing official. :)

Thanks everyone! I was starting to get all confused with the official names and papers! It's just that I am a newbie at all of this so I wanted to make sure I did my research first!

Thanks again! You were all very helpful!
