Who names the pup?

    Who names the pup?

I was just wondering, I notice that the breeders here all have names for their pups. Do you name them or does the person buying them name them?

It depends from country to country.  In the UK, the breeder gives the dog its KC name.  In the US, the breeder simply registers the litter, and the owner registers and names the puppy.

My dog that I just got came with a name and he is registered.  I decided I liked his name so we kept it.

Depends! This time around, I had a theme so I registered all but 1 of the pups in Susie's litter to me and chose their registered name. In Nonnie's I also had a theme but allowed Frenchy's new people to change her registered name. My kennel name is still first however, and that's written into the contract.

If the breeder wants a certain reg name they simply have to write it into the cntract and both parties agree to it in the form of signing the contract...and when the puppy goes home the reg papers are already filled in with the name. AKC recently allowed a 1 time namechange thing, UKC dogs names can be changed more often.

The call name is always up to the buyer tho.

The AKC's wording is that the "owner of the puppy/dog at the time of sale has the right to name it"...but it all comes down to what your contract states. Names are important to folks...esp on show puppies. People name dogs some really silly or just blah things and you don't need a bad handle on your next big winner...haha!

If I plan on keeping a puppy I name it. Any puppy I have bred I request that the new owner include my "kennel name" in the name and I also do the same for any pup I aquire.

Our newest pup Teddy is "Eclectic Mr Roosevelt at Nucks"
Nuck's is my kennel name. Eclectic is the breeders.

I give all the pups a "call name", which the new owners can (and usually DO change), but I hate to have "sable girl" or "tricolor boy" instead of a name when referring to them.  I do require that my kennel name be used, and to have input into the registered name the new owner chooses, just so it matches a certain theme or idea that I had planned for the litter.
