    cbs sunday morning show-puggles

do any of you watch the cbs sunday morning show? it is usually a show about art, architecture, etc with some social commentary thrown in as well. yesterday bill geist (their resident funny guy) had a segment about designer dogs and spoke with a person who "creates" these designer breeds. they even had my wife believing that these were legitimate breeds because they are registered with the ACHC (American Canine Hybrid Club). here is a link to a transcript of the segment....

i was very disappointed as i normally enjoy the show, but i may have to find another way to occupy my sunday mornings from now on.

Yes, I read that story yesterday on another dog forum. It's really unfortunate.. I really liked the part about how puggles and the rest of the designer mutts are produced by "modern canine breeding science."

    "modern canine breeding science."

1 male dog + 1 female dog = many small cages full of puppies

the guy they interviewed had what looked like a rather large warehouse full of bins and cages, all of which were filled with puppies. it looked clean but still very sad.

Our local newspaper did a story several months ago about the popularity of puggles and then did a breathless follow-up about how, since their story, local pet stores were rapidly selling out. I e-mailed the reporter pointing out the dangers of pet store sales and the danger of people buying a pet as if they were picking out a designer handbag, but got no response. As long as some journalists continue to be clueless about this stuff, or think that it's merely grist for humor, so many dogs will suffer....

It is very sad and I was just at the local big pet store here and I saw a book that said in the title "How to make your own designer dog".  I thought I was going to have an anurisum but I quickly was hurried out by my husband before I lost it. I just do not understand the lack of respect that is being shown for life. ;Puppies are being made here not new lines of clothing!

I was at the dog park near our house the other day and there was a girl there with her 7-year-old beagle. Very overweight, smelly ears, horrible coat condition.  They were playing with a couple young pugs, and I heard the girl saying to her mom that they should talk to one of the pug owners and see if his dog was neutered. 'Cause if not, maybe he would be interested in breeding puggles with them.

The mom was skeptical, but the girl went on and on about how she'd seen on "the news" that puggles were the hot new breed, and that breeding pugs and beagles together eliminated all the health & behavior issues of each type of dog.  She went on to say that you could get at least $700-1000 per puppy, and that started to convince the mom.

I just prayed the 7-year-old beagle wouldn't even be able to get pregnant.  I know I should have said something, but they weren't standing in a position where it would be casual to slip in and join the conversation.  [:@]

How sad!  There are so many homeless dogs waiting in shelters and rescues....why not give those designer dogs homes instead.  Now the new has to jump on this band wagon too, UGH!  As if there aren't enough puppy mills!

    Hello.
I have 2 beautiful, sweet, lovable and smart Puggles. That I Love so much. 1 male, Buddy Boy and 1 female Baby Girl. Both about 4 1/2 monthes old, diffent litters. I have had purebred, AKC, Bloodhounds in the past. I believe the Puggle should be purebreds, AKC too.So what do you think? It would take a lot of time and Puggle Lovers Clubs, I think it would be worth it!  They are the best of both breeds. Also my Best good girl, 9 years old.
    My Angel, coon & lab.
                                                                                  Thank You, Mary & Babies

    Dear Mary and babies:

To "set" type in a breed takes many, many generations (read HUMAN generations) with many surplus dogs produced who look/act/perform nothing like the ideal.  When dogs had functions other than to make money for their breeders, breeders could be patient and "cull" dogs that didn't meet the standard, by selling or giving them to the pet owning public.  What do you think Mr. Puggle Inventor and his cohorts are going to do with next generation puggle puppies that don't look like puggles?  He can't sell them as puggles and they won't hunt (as beagles do) and pug owners won't want them.

For the AKC to accept them, they'd have to "breed true" for many generations.  That is, two puggles make puggle babies.  That doesn't happen right now - it takes the above process to create that situation.  Therefore, every time a cute little puggle is produced, it came from some poor pug or beagle mama whose only purpose in life is to sit in a cage and crank out those cute, expensive babies for unwitting souls to buy.

Enjoy your puppies.  Please consider saving a life at the shelter next time - and ditto anyone else thinking of getting one of these cash cow puppies.
