    Scared of his poop

Just to forewarn everyone that this post will be a bit disgusting due to the nature of my question.  Boomer is 9 months old and recently I have noticed when I take him out to go poop, as he's "squatting" if the poop does not come out right away (in that it takes a bit longer for all of his poop to come out) he'll start running away with the poop hanging from him until it finally falls due to his running.  Could this be that something is hurting him as he's doing his business and thats why he runs?  Or is this somewhat normal behaviour once in awhile?  Thanks for any response to this odd post [:)]

Do you shave his trace? If not he could be getting his short hairs pulled by the exiting poop and it hurts, or some sort of mat. He could also have impacted anal glands. In either case a butt exam is probably in order...hope you have some latex gloves handy [;)]

Oh boy....I have a feeling i'm going to regret asking the following question.  How is a butt examine administered?  Should I be doing this or should I be taking him to my vet?

LOL...just visually LOOK back there....see if there's an abundance of hair..."cling ons' etc.  This is usually easiest when the dog is up on something. Look on either side of the anus and see if there are any swellings there. touch the anus itself and on either side to see if a pain response is present...the anal glands are on either side of the anus. Is there any fluid leaking? staining? hard on a black dog I know! Shaving back there also makes changes easier to spot BTW. You'd probably have noticed the awful smell if the anal glands were leaking. Does your boy drag his bottom on the floor? That's a sign of trouble at the back end.

In a dog with a wooly coat like yours shaving the trace isn't a bad idea. The trace is a path from  the underside base of the tail...down to the scrotum....including the anus.

The running could simply be a reaction to the movement taking too long to pass. It could have hair, grass, fibers of some kind that are making it take it's time on the way out or feel like it's not coming out right. That is a dietary issue that could probably be helped out by some folks here. Are the poops he makes firm, hard, or soft?

All 3 of my dogs have done this on occasion.  Usually when they have managed to ingest some the the stuffing from their "victims".  It makes the poop hang there for a second longer than they would like and makes them nervous I think.  I wouldn't worry about it unless it was happening all the time.

I have noticed him "dragging" his bum a few times lately....on the carpet and on the grass outside.  I will try shaving his area down which hopefully will help.  I have not noticed and leakage.  Funny thing is one time he spooked himself when as he was doing his business a "fart" came out and that freaked him out.  I couldn't help but start laughing.

Both of my dogs have this problem on occasion when they bring one of their chews in my dressing area and lay on the floor and chew and get some of my hair that is on the floor.  Most of  the time if the walk around funny for a minute it will come off but there have been times I have had to pull the actual hair out to release the poop!  It is always of course at a very opportune time too when there is nothing but a small leaf laying around and usually a bunch of people watching!  [:)]  It really freaks Izzy out and sends her running around like a mad woman.

If your dog is dragging his butt though, that can be a sign of other problems.  I believe impacted anal glands or even worms....but I could be wrong.  I am sure someone else will come along to correct me.

Harley farts a lot and he scares himself often when they are loud!  Silly dogs! [;)

Also, I just saw this question in another part of the board as well.  If you add a little pure canned pumpkin (not the pie mix) just pumpkin, that should help firm the stools up a little.  Harley and Izzy both had runny stool when they first got onto Innova and still do at times.  The pumpkin does wonders for that, and an upset tummy.
