    Schutzhund Training (pic heavy) [Liesje]

We switched back to Sundays and moved back outdoors!

Tracking was difficult, there was an icy wind and it was sleeting, plus this is the first time most of us have tracked since Thanksgiving.  Most people did straight tracks but Nikon did a "J" (two turns) and did better than I thought, especially his last leg b/c of the wind direction.  No pics of him though. My friend Becky and my trainer with his Malinois:

LOL, no problem!  Schutzhund is tracking, obedience, and protection so we work all three in that order.  Also, tracking can be easier in the morning b/c the grass is damp, so it is easier for klutzy noobs like me to see my track (the damp grass sticks down) and also gives off more scent for the dog (which can be good and bad).  First we drive to someone's farm and track on their land.  The big guy is the trainer so he generally walks on all the tracks and sometimes helps with the line handling.  In Schutzhund tracking the dog's nose should be plastered to the ground, checking every footstep.  The flag marks the beginning of the track (the front left corner of the scent pad).  After tracking, we drive to our club.  Since it was sleeting, we went indoors to warm up.  The puppies got to practice indoors.  We have one younger dog who is very reactive to other dogs and gets easily distracted, so we had all the puppies out playing tug with their owners while she practiced walking around.  Then the rest of the dogs went outdoors.  The "BH" is a test you have to pass before doing Schutzhund titles.  It is a very long obedience test (see example here: ).  While one dog is doing the obedience routine, another dog is doing a long down on the side of the field.  We have five dogs getting ready for a BH so we did a mock one outside.  Otherwise, we usually do obedience outside with 2-3 people working at a time at various corners of the field.  Then we took a snack break.  Nikon's twin came out to say hi.  She was just returned to the breeder so she's getting some socialization.  After that is protection.  Each dog is worked completely differently, hence the difference in sleeves being used, how many leashes are on the dog, what collar is on, etc.  For example, Nikon started learning to "out" (let go), his mother Kira was working on control, Sabree is working biting hard and full (she just started and has only ever known that biting things in the house is bad, so she's learning that biting the sleeve is OK).

thanks! I actually read the WHOLE thing on wikipedia. very cool.

Yes I would think that it would be a bit confusing for dog to learn 'no biting here',but biting 'here' is ok. lol.
