shammy- adhd update, need your thoughts

Here is an email I just got from Noah's teacher.

"I wanted to let you know the last 2 mornings Noah has been so calm and cooperative.  Afternoons have been a bit more active.  This morning he has been more fidgety, noises, etc.  I don’t know if it is helpful to keep you posted, but thought I would let you know I saw a big change the last few mornings."

What's different this morning?  We were running late and I generally start him out with high protein/fat food.  Nitrite free bacon or sausage, chicken tenders (naked) etc.  I have read that adhd/autistic kids do well on high protein diets.   This morning since we were late he had a piece of Gluten Free udi's toast and his yogurt with the holisitic supplement Attend and Extress mixed in.

I am thinking since she notices him more fidgety and noisy in the afternoon it's becuse it's something typically like a gf sandwich (cheese and pepperoni), gf crackers or pretzels, and then a cheese stick or yogurt or nuts (salt free almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds).

SO, what I want to try next week if I can 1. find ways to keep meat hot in his lunchbox from 8am to 11:45 when he eats.  and 2. The meat I pack- what should it be? What is appealing?  Cut up chicken pieces?  What about kethup or dips?  I would like to have him eat more veggies and fruit- we're workign on getting him to like them more. I also give him that v-8 fusion orange or strawberry juice for lunch, which says it has one serving of fruit and veggies each. He loves it a bunch.

Which is were I need ideas to keep the food HOT and WHAT to pack for him.   May have to cruise walmart and see what they have. I've been googling and the one thing I'm interested is backordered. Hm.

But it was GREAT to see someone else noticing a difference in Noah's behavior!  And for me to deduce maybe he does better on high protein rather than gf foods.  Just need more food ideas for that school lunch...

Will he not eat stuff like the chicken tenders if they are cold? Or if he's kindergarden, maybe his teacher or an aide could warm his lunch up, especially if you told the teacher why you wanted him to have more protein at lunchtime - better behavior in the afternoons.

I'll have to try Noah on eating cold chicken.  He will eat hotdogs cold (gf/nitrite free ones). I will have to ask about the possiblility of him being able to use a microwave. The school has been great about working with me so far, although the migh tbe a pain on this one, we'll see.

I cant offer too much with the menu just wanted to tell you how great it is to have a teacher willing to help you keep track of this so that you can determine what's working and what is not.   Also wanted to give you a big hug, you are doing a very good job Shammy Mommy Left HugRight Hug

As a kid I was happy as a clam with strips of steak.  I'd rather eat meat COLD than hot.  If you did your own chicken pieces (maybe a lemon marinade) you wouldn't need to bread them at all and maybe a yogurt and dill dip. (Tzatziki sauce? hummus -- that's high protein and high iron -- yum)

Sounds like you're doing a great job!  If you need to keep something like chicken tenders warm, how about one of those wide mouth thermos bottles that people take soup or chili in? I'd be willing to bet there's a microwave in the teacher's lounge, so maybe under the circumstances his teacher would zap something for him.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the diet stuff, but I do work with a lot of kids on gluten free diets. A lot of them take deli meat, but not in a sandwich. Most of them won't eat gluten free bread (and neither would I). Their parents often just pack them just rolled up slices of meat. They just eat it like finger food, as they might with chicken nuggets or something like that. One of the others often takes what looks like tuna, but I believe is actually chicken. One of them frequently takes a sandwich with some sort of peanut butter alternative, or she will take crackers with hummus. Breaded chicken I wouldn't eat cold, but nuggets that aren't breaded, I would eat cold with ketchup.

Does he like soup?  Maybe you could get a wide mouth thermos and make a soup or stew that's heavy on protein and meets his requirements.  If he won't eat gluten free bread (maybe he would if he was sopping up the soup with it?), what about beef or chicken pot pie?  The gluten free pie crusts are pretty good.  I actually make apple pie for T-day for my cuz's hubby who can't eat gluten at all, and I prefer that crust to traditional.  Some kids like mild chili - loaded with beans and also a protein source that fits in those wide mouth bottles.
