I'm really excited at this prospect for you, Jen! It has been such a positive move for us to adopt a second dog.  You've gotten lots of good advice - we supervised very closely and limited Mia's range and priviliges at first, but we progressed quickly because Pofi just wanted to be with her all the time and he has free range.

I think my best advice is probe for as much medical info as possible and then follow up with a throrough once over with your vet.  Maybe not on day one, but as soon as you've built some trust.  I think out mistake was not consulting with our vets sooner.  Mia was only with the Rescue org for just over a week and the contract specified that if she was sick within 10 days they agreed to take her back (as if) or have her treated by an approved vet at their expense with pre-authorization.  It also said she had been examined by a vet, received age appropriate vaccs, heartworm test, spay/neuter and microchip.

We were also told by the foster parent that she drank a lot of water and was being crated because she was not fully house trained and water ran right through her.  We assumed they would have looked into any medical reason for this, but we were wrong.  When we tried putting her on a very regular schedule and monitoring water intake, we still had accidents so we went to our vet after a few weeks.  Her urine definitely was not concentrated and we then realized she had a vaginal infection and might have benefitted from going through a heat cycle...

Her original surrender paperwork indicates they had "started" housebreaking, meaning they had not been successful and yet this got overlooked. It seems likely this had been her issue all along - after antibiotics, we had her swabbed again to confirm vaginitis was cleared up.  Now it appears the antibiotic temporarily quelled another issue - suddenly this weekend we noticed the incision from her spay (3 months ago) was very irritated.  It seems she is having a reaction to suture material.  So antibiotics again for the abcesses....

My point - I'm sure it was a decent and caring vet the rescue org was working with, but in the process of owner surrender to shelter, shelter surrender to rescue, rescue to vet for exam, meds, spay, THEN to the foster home and then a week later to us, communication/knowledge that could have been key to helping her with her health issues was lost in the shuffle.  So take charge of her health right away with a "look under the hood" at your own vets.

Maybe that is common sense, but when we paid her adoption fee, it seemed like we were helping to defray the expense/investment that had already been made into appropriate health care and I wish we'd just brought her in to our vet sooner.

Watch for Roscoe being a little "guardy" with you - Pofi still is a bit with me - when we first get up in the morning and when I first get home from work, he doesn't like her being too close to me....after he gets some hugs he mellows out.  Carve out some individual, one on one time for each of them.  Ken and I will sometimes split them up - he takes Mia away with him to bond with her and Pofi gets some play/snuggle time with me.

Good luck - she's quite pretty!

Jen, Gracie is a beauty.  I'm glad to hear you're thinking of getting Roscoe a sister.  I hope she works out.
