Kong question.......

    Kong question.......

For those of you that have babies you play with kongs....How long does it take to empty them?  And what do you use in them.  I have tried plain peanut butter and Shane doesn't like it.  I have also tried the expensive stuff that you can buy to go in one, but sheesh I would have to take out a loan to keep that up.  If I put a piece of turkey or try to lodge a treat in it, it only takes him a matter of seconds to use it.  So I tried pb and a little bit of turkey tonight.  Its been about 30 miuntes and he is still working on it.  I am trying to find something to occupy some time while I am gone during the day.  Shane is a rescue and doesn't do well in a crate, so I thought I would try this.  Do I have the right idea?  Thanks!

geeze at the end of that I didn't make much sense.  I was typing while doing 1,000 other things.  Sorry!  I am hoping it will help him while I am gone during the day.  I don't like to crate him and here lately he has been getting into things.  We got him from a friend and we think he spent a lot of time in a crate, so he doesn't do well in one now. He likes his freedom.  Ok now maybe this makes sense.  Anyway, I hope you get the idea.

    Thanks![:)]

I mostly put Roscoe's dinner or breakfast in his Kong (raw ground turkey and beef kidney usually), and it is an XL stuffed full. If it is thawed, 5 minutes MAX, usually less.  If it is frozen, about 35-45 minutes.

What takes the longest for me (30-45 minutes) is if I put things that are bigger than the hole in the kong while they are thawed and then freeze them.  He really has to work to get those out.  I really like using forzen Nature's Variety raw medallions. I put 5 of those in the Kong and it takes him an hour to get them out.

Sounds like you have the right idea, though lots of people recommend not using a whole lot of PB 'cause it is fattening.  I think it depensd on the exercise level your dog gets. Last summer Roscoe got so much exercise that I could stuff a medium Kong with PB every day and he didn't gain any weight.

This is gonna sound goofy- but this is what I do for Daisy's Kong:

I make up a batch of a mixture of low-fat peanut butter and pumpkin (equal parts for each- i use 1/2 cup PB; 1/2 cup pumpkin) together (it smells really tasty) it'll make into almost like a cookie-dough.
Then I put it in ice-cube trays. I lightly (and I do mean lightly) spray the trays with Pam (because they will stick and you'll have a nasty clean-up) then I spread it all in there. (my batch usually fits 1 tray). I freeze it overnight, and then for Daisy I put 2 cubes in her Kong and Oscar gets 3.

I don't know how long it takes them, but I have a 2 hour class in the morning, and when I get back, both are licked clean.
Daisy has to stay in the crate anyway (because she destroys the house if left alone), so this occupies her time while she's in there.

I have noticed though, that they have to go to the bathroom as soon as I come in- as the pumpkin has a lot of fiber in it.

    Good luck!

If I put kibble in, it takes Max all of a few minutes. I can't freeze it because he'll give up on it if it's too hard to get the food out. Sometimes i'll put something in that's harder to get out, but lazy Max gives up after about 15 minutes if he's not sucessful. Millie will fight with the kong all night to get a biscuit though.

Jasmine loves her Kong filled with plain yogurt and pumpkin, then frozen.  It really doesn't take her too long to empty it out, even frozen!   At first, we bought her too big a Kong and she couldn't clean it out.  We had to get her a smaller one!

I like everyone's idea about freezing the kong - maybe it would take Shane longer!!??

I have tried various concoctions in Dodger's kong: yogurt, peanut butter, rollover, kibble, fruits, veggies, pureed meat etc...  He seems to really enjoy his kong when I blend up some meat (as if I were making liver treats) and freezing it.  He still manages to get everything out of his kong in under 15 minutes, no matter what I try!

Maybe you could also leave a tricky treat ball or everlasting treat ball?  I have both - the tricky treat ball is definately his favourite but he finshes that even quicker!  The everlasting treat ball seems to frustrate him more than anything (he often gives up!).  But at least after some eating and attempts at getting the food out, it brings on nap time!!!

I used to just put kibbles in Tojo's kong but he figured out really soon how to just dump them out.  After that I started plugging the big end with peanut butter so that he had to lick through that before getting the kibbles.  It still doesn't take very long.  The more peanut butter I use, the longer it takes, but still, it only takes him about ten minutes.  He usually licks the kong for a long time after it's empty, though.  I give him that every day and he hasn't gained any weight from the peanut butter.  He's very young and very active, though.  Maybe I will try freezing it, though.

I vary the layer's of the Kong with kibble, yogurt, Kong Trail Mix, Kong PB and freeze it .  Sorry I have no idea how long it takes Trixie to finish it, but it is licked clean.

While on the Kong question, anyone have a dog (9 month old Cair) chew pieces off the Kong, I had to take it away!

I guess we're lucky, because Spiffy loves pb. So, I just mix in some with the small kibbles. I don't mix in too much pb though as vet mentioned that all schnauzers should stay away from all fats as they are prone to pancreatic problems later in life and fats help bring on the situation. If your dog likes smoked items, you could try mixing in some of the little smoked bacon smelling  or cheese dog treats. My vet has one or the other in a bowl at check out and they really give off the bacon or cheese smell. And, they must be healthy if he gives them out. Just break a little in small pcs-- enough to give a good smell --and mix in with the kibble bits.

These are all greast ideas! I never even thought about all the things I could put in Ash's kong. She used to love PB, but I think she's tired of it now. I no close to NOTHING about what  you and and can't feed a dog, so I have some research to do. I am very excited to try these new things.
