    at the shelter

We went to the Sherman Animal Shelter today to ask what donations they could use, and ended up looking at the dogs and my wife was tempted to get one. If we didn't already have a dog, we would have gotten one or two. There was a siberian there with eyes like Shadow's except Shadow's eyes are lighter.

Anyway, the real point of this is that we saw a labradoodle. What, you ask? A designer dog brought about for "hypo-allergenic" reasons in a shelter? And the poor thing was in desparate need of a clipping, as the fur was not as curly as a poodle so that when it grows out, it grows long and falls over the eyes. So, true, they don't shed as much and end up looking like a dust mop with a shortened head.

I wonder if there will be labradoodle rescue orgs to handle the inevitable influx of designers dogs that they owners got tired of or found out that they are no more hypo-allergenic than any other dog?

I can see the rescue now something like [linkhttp://www.backyardbredthendumpedbutheythenamewascute.org]www.backyardbredthendumpedbutheythenamewascute.org[/link]
    accepting donations of acmeallcornlowprosimulateddogfoodproduct
and in desperate need of a vet tech from a third world country for quickie grooming and surgeries.  We need bailing wire to fix our pik up truk.  Ask for our puppy-mill bulk adoption discount at the counter.               [:@][:'(]Jules

Just one of the many many reasons dogs are dumped at the pound.  Its sad.

This dog was a bit large, about the size of a regular black lab. The owners might have been like some people I've heard of who like puppies but once they get to 1 or 2 years old, they don't want to deal with a big dog eating and pooping.

Or as I originally surmised, they found out that the dog wasn't so hypo-allergenic after all. My view on that is if someone is allergic to dogs, then maybe they should consider if they are better off not having a dog. Or maybe, a hairless dog with minimal dander, and there are purebreeds with such characteristics. Labs are constant shedders and poodles need consistent grooming. We all have limitations in life and learn to deal with it. Example, a person who has lost the use of their legs goes on with life, working around or with that challenge. And, to some people, not being able to walk is more important than being able to have a certain pet.

And it is sad, considering that there are people breeding and buying labradoodles for either "hypo-allergenic" reasons or it's the flavor of the month or it makes a cute puppy. A cute puppy that grows into a dog that someone doesn't want anymore. Same with the siberian there. And there were some dalmations, too. The dalmations and the sibe looked to be purebreed. As someone else (I think Jennie CD)said,  you can find pure-breeds at the shelter. And what, besides not thinking very clearly, causes people to spend pure-breed price and then surrender or abandon later?

Dont know I guess I try to look at it like, these poor dogs are better off at the pound (no kill of course) where they have a chance to find a home where they will be WANTED and loved the way they deserve than with a family who does not love them properly.  And any family who drops them off one day did not love them properly anyway.  Of course those people should hae never gotten a dog.  BTW - dont they have enough allergy medicines out there by now to take care of an allergy to a dog?

Heres one I saw when I found that GSD mix I wanted...dont know what could have caused this poor guy to end up at the pound.

Of course I dont know what could have cause ANY of these pups to end up there... but since you mention the cost of a ;purebreed just to drop off I thought of him.

Just thought of something, as much as I hate to admit it.  My uncle has a lot of money, we are not close dont ever see him and all that, but hear things.  He bought a lab, purebred, and then it ran away cause he just left it outside to run free all the time... now, he does live in a private area, but...? Didnt seem to care much either.  He also bought a hound of some sort, Im bad with breeds, the long floppy eared kind, purebred, which died of lepto (Im pretty sure it was lepto) because he didnt get it any shots!  No knowledge on whether or not he has a dog now... but the point, is money is not a big deal to some and they get these dogs and then just dump them like a piece of furniture they changed their mind about.[:@]

Quite true. And true, there are people with gobs of money and a disposable mindset. Just as in the 80's everyone had to get a BMW to show that they could get one. Then, everyone had to get a Harley to show that they could afford one. Then, everyone had to get an SUV to show that they can afford one.

I just happened to notice that you're from the Big Easy. My BIL and his family live a few towns north of Baton Rouge. We once ate a Ralph and Kacoo's in Baton Rouge and we're so happy to have one in Allen, Tx. We've eaten there a few times. And they're suppose to build one in Dallas and one in Houston. Before that, it was Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Bossier City.

BTW Ron - I think you and your wife have room for another dog, dont you!!  :o)  Okay okay, I know.... [;)]
