    Running with dog

Do any of you run with your dogs? My Oscar is 1 1/2 and LOVES action. I've heard different things about how old a dog should be before running with you. Any suggestions? I generally run 3-5 miles but could start him out on shorter distances especially since it gets pretty hot around here in the summer.

I run with both of mine.  The vet advised that I not start until they were 1 year old to allow for their skeletal system to develop before running, however I've heard others say that it's fine to run sooner as long as you're not running on pavement.

I run on pavement, but I use a long enough leash that they can run on the grass beside me.  We have no real trails in the area...[:(]

In general I start them with less mileage than I run so we'll start in the spring with running around the block (10-15mins) and then work up.  Wes was running 8-10k with me by the end of last year.  (I don't run outside Dec-Feb it's TOO cold and the ice is treacherous!)  I'm actually running both dogs right now at 6am so we can be sure not to see anyone.  I get exercise, they're less annoying in the morning and plus it's nice and cool then.

You could also do a loop where Oscar runs with you on the first loop and then you drop him off and do another loop.  That way you get your run in and he gets a run too.

In the summer I don't run with them if it's too hot and I only run in the morning or at night.  I also carry water in the warmer weather for them (and me) or I carry change so I can buy water for us.

The worst is the clean-up.  I'm very sure that I have STRONG bags now.  (I've had a couple explode [:'(] [:@])  We have NO garbage cans anywhere near where I run.  I guess the city would rather have garbage and poop everywhere as opposed to paying someone to empty cans. *shaking head*

I wouldn't let a dog do sustained running on pavement until at LEAST one year...older in the larger breeds.
