Vizsla- What do I need to know.....

when I go to look at a potential show pup? I was wanting a Irish Red and White Setter to show but have fallen for the Vizsla. One of the ladies in the club I just joined raises them and she is going to help me show mine if I get one. I would be getting a male(agreement I made with JJ). I am going to look at 2 12 week old males Saturday. They are already so brave and go swimming in the pond at their breeders.

    Here's some pictures:

My advice to you would be to read the breed standard, of course, and watch the videos of the breed on the Westminster Kennel Club website from last year. That will give you an idea of what they like to see in the breed ring.

I know nothing about V's except that Ruppert is my favorite one in the world & that those puppies are aDORable!

One of my agility friends runs a Viszla and I ADORE that dog -- but holy cow, is he ever a ball of energy.  The breed in general needs a ton of activity/exercise or they will drive you nuts.  They are beautiful dogs, but I'm not sure I could handle that amount/type of energy in my house.  lol

    Adorable puppies!!!!

I have an Irish Setter so I am good on the energy sporting dogs have. Lillie is gonna be so happy having a dog around that has her energy!!

I hope Rupert's mom will tell me a little more about living with them.

irish setters are lazy couch potatoes when compared to a vizsla- make sure you know what you are getting into.

Pretty pups! I don't know a whole lot about them- but i agree with everyone else...extreme energy!

Agreed - Morrison has Vizsla friends at daycare and at the dog park that he runs with (the docked tail club).  There are also Irish and English Setters in these play groups and Morrison and his buddies outrun the setters and have energy to spare.  Also look into the health issues that these guys may be prone to as they can end up being extremely expensive.

Vizslas are wonderful dogs and we considered getting one before Morrison but we decided that we couldn't handle the energy and training and went for the GSP instead!  When you consider how much get up and go a GSP has it will give you an idea on the Vizsla.

Vizsla's are very active dogs and can be very prey driven, since they are verstile gun dogs.  I have been around a few and trained one and I loved them.  The ones I worked with were quite "soft" but they did have a ton of energy.  I agree with mudpuppy that they are quite different from an Irish Setter as far as energy requirements in my experience.  They are beautiful puppies and they do make wonderful pets if they get what they need physically and mentally.

One of my good girlfriends has a 2 year old Viszla named Cheif. He is the sweetest, happiest dog ever. I cant comment on his neergy level since she is a heavy jogger and jogs with him for a hour or more everyday.....I mena religiously. So by the time I see him he is probably pooped.  I read somwhere they are in the top 5 of least aggressive dogs and get along with just about any dog.

Chief is a clown. He is like a goofy lil fawn but is very attentive to her, seemed very easy to train except potty training. She had a hard time with that. He has a miscevious side. Digging up potted plants despite the fact she has sand and dirt in her back yard, when she makes the bed he'll bite at the sheets and pull them off, LOL and my favorite is that when she gather kindling for the fir he grabs it and disperses it all through the house!

     Thanks for that info Auroralove!!

I already have a excersice schedule for my dogs. We go out in the morning for a walk/jog 2 miles, just me and the dogs. In the evening after supper we go for a 4 mile walk, Samantha included on this one. Before it gets dark I take the dogs for a bike run 2-4 miles, depends on how into it I am. And if weather permits we go on a miday walk after lunch. That walk doesnt have a certain mileage. We just walk till we want to come home. Usually just a 2 mile walk. We just got back from a nice midday walk actually. Lillie is pooped. I made her pull the wagon.

On Tuesdays I have conformation class. And if I get a pup we will be going to obiedience class and play around with some agility too.

I always think Viszlas look like they have the same taste and consistency as fudge.  Whenever I see Rupert I always wants ta NIBBLE him Big Smile

They are gorgeous!!  I adore the little guys we used to call them Mini minas since my liver nosed girl was often mistaken for a large Vizla  ( by dummies she was a ridgeback)

I would suggest you go by a few things if you are wanting to show.

A pup who is both happy and solid. One who is out going and handles noise easily. One who can focus when you have a great treat.  Learn the STANDARD. It is your best friend.   Go for a moderate pup, not the biggest not the smallest ....

Look at the color... pups are generally more vibrant than the adult color.  watch feet carefully... what is your breed standard on feet??

As far as Breeders go there is an awful puppy mill in Texas I advise folks to stay well away from great web site etc but .....  you can PM me it you are thinking about buying one from that state.  Get a breeder with a GOOD contract and who wants to be involved.... They will answer you phone calls and be thrilled for you and the pup when you have a great day , symapthize when you have a rotten one. Look at both parents if possible and if they were show dogs get the breeder to stack them  take a million photos from every angle and when you are training keep the look of the eagle in mind.

You are really lucky to have someone want to mentor you locally !!  It is the BEST way to go into the ring .  I bet in a few years You will be offering to mentor others !!

Best of Luck and let us know what you get and the name !! Plus you know we all adore puppy pictures hint hint

     Thanks Bonita.

I fell in love with Rupert and Gunner when I joined this site almost a year ago. I really really wanted to get an Irish Red and White Setter but would be showing it blindly since no breeders/handlers to help me how to show. There is a lady in the club I joined that breeds and shows Vizsla's willing to help me, I mentioned I liked Vizsla's before knowing she had Vizsla's. I was already in love with the breed so I started looking into them. Then I came across these two pups and JJ said no more dogs unless I was to get a male so how could the luck be any better than that?

Hopefully tomorrow you guys will get to drool over puppy Vizsla pics!! I already have a name picked out.
