Breeds That Aren't For You

I'm also a bit rough, as far as handling goes. I have been known to totally unintentionally freak out a small or overly soft dog. My girls like it rough, though, LOL. One of BOTH their fav games is to play tuggy while being smacked in the side and groooowowwwwllll thier little hearts out. Then, I say "give" and they RUN to try and beat the toy, LOL.

I probably won't have anything smaller than a regular sized Chinese Crested, and no delicate Cresteds! My friend has a 4 lb Chi, and he's awesome. He lives with big dogs, and he's tough as nails. I'm always afraid I'm going to sit on him, or something, and when I see him fly off the furniture, or after the big dogs, my heart stops.

I think it would be somewhat amusing in a few years to see who ends up with the dogs on their 'absolutely not!' list. Just based on the dog people I know, many seem to have one of their least favorite breeds find them. (Remember I'm the one who said 'absolutely no toy dogs! LOL!)

There are two types of breeds that aren't for me -- anything not suited for active, outdoor sports (such as anything brachycephalic or hairless) and bully breeds, because I simply don't have the patience they need. Beyond that, it's more of individual dogs than breeds -- anything low energy, low drive, low intelligence will only frustrate me.

For rescuing- I could not say no to any dog.

For keeping- I would not keep a small dog because I like to do work with big dogs.

Toy breeds that yip all the time and any breeds that need regular grooming, such as the poodle (but love some poodle's personalities)

Also, any hound breeds do to their deep baying or wandering breeds (beagle)

Have met some wonderful pits (it's all in how they are raised) but there are insurance concerns.

     shar pei - skin problems

breeds with short life spans, great dane, tea cup poodle

hyper breeds, need to herd etc. although love the intelligence of the typical border collie.

my dream breed (could be a new subject) = a calm, well grounded, smart, healthy dog, could be a mix breed.

That is sooo true! In the past I only wanted big dogs, the bigger the better. Then I found that they don't really suit me or my lifestyle and that my favorite dogs are actually the toy ones. What a difference!

     Let's see...what's not for me?

Giant dogs. I love Danes and St. Bernards and the like, but I just couldn't have that large of a dog around, deal with all their special size-related issues (especially as they're growing) and have the heartbreak of knowing their lifespan will be fairly short.

Teeny tiny dogs.  I like a dog that's a good medium to largish size.  I wouldn't want to be worrying about hurting a little Yorkie or anything.  Plus I want a dog that can go hiking and whatnot with me.

Pit bulls and related breeds that are banned places.  I love them.  I think they're great.  But the breed bans make me shy away from them.  What if I ended up getting a job in a place that had banned them?  I live in apartments right now and what if I can't find a new apartment that allows them?  The thought of having to give up a dog I loved because of other people's idiocy just breaks my heart and so I stick with breeds that I know won't be banned anywhere.

Short-coated breeds.  Not that I don't like them, but I really love a dog I can sink my hands into.  Give me a long-coated or medium coated breed anyday!

Breeds I particularly just don't care for?  Chihahuas, Old English Bulldogs, Pekingneses, Pugs, Dachshunds, Basset Hounds, Bloodhounds, and Bedlington Terriers.

Breeds I really LIKE?  I love the herding breeds...Border collies (I own a border collie/lab mix), Aussies, and the like.  Also some spaniels -- Brittanys, Springs and the like.

And to break my "tiny dogs" thing, I've always adored Papillons.  They're just too cute, but look SO fragile.

This is just me going off of looks and what I've heard about them.

Aussies- They aren't attractive to me at all.
Border Collies- They sound way to hyper for me.
Bichon Frises- I have never had luck with that breed. Mine ate it's tail off, my mom's died of mange and my aunt's is out of it. I just dislike that breed entirely.

I honestly thought I disliked more breeds, but I really don't. Just the three I listed above, I'd never touch with a ten-foot pole. I'm just so turned off by those three dog breeds.

Although I am not a fan of the Herding group and the Sporting group. I perfer the working and terrier group, overall.

So funny that we all love dogs in general, but can be polar opposites in particular.  I LOVE Aussies, BC's, and all the herders and LGD's.  I do want to add a sort of dislike, though.  Any dog that screams for no other reason than because it's a fearful weenie.  Makes my skin crawl, just like kids in restaurants that screech, or fingernails on a blackboard.

I don't know if there's any breed I really don't like, but I do prefer a bigger dog to a very small one.  I would never want to own a small, yappy dog.  I also don't like excessively hairy dogs that shed a lot, or dogs that drool a lot.  I am very spoiled with my Standard Poodles. They are large, happy, playful, sweet-natured, athletic, and clean!

I would never own a Lab, only because it seems like just about everyone has a Lab!

I'm not a great fan of small terriers.

I would never want a Chow or an Akita.

I wouldn't want a St. Bernard because of the drooling.

Hehe....thats what I said! LOL! But I have one. I love him to bits. Ya never know when one of those no-no dogs will steal your heart!

My Chinese Crested loves to play frisbee, and loves the beach. She swims, and wrestles with dogs of all shapes and sizes. She is full of confidence, and pretty much rocks anything she tries. She is a true hairless.

"Hairless" doesn't translate to "dog on a pillow". Chinese Cresteds, as a breed, excell in agility. They're great at lure coursing. They're very active, fun to work with dogs. Slate colored dogs are actually very sun tolerant (think of people with skin that dark... it's hard to burn!). My slate Crested can tolerate a LOT more sun than my fair skin can.

I can't think of any breed I have said that I would never own.  But I would stay clear of dogs who need to much exercise, I just don't have the time...

I love a lot of dogs, but as far a owning I don't think I'll ever have anything outside the herding group.  Fav breeds: Australian Cattle Dogs and Border Collies.  Ziva might have some other breeds in her, but her behavior is very herding dog imo.

Least fav breed tends to be Goldens because those that I meet in classes are crazy hyper w/o an off switch, many have arousal issues (no impulse control) and a lot also are very needy.  Labs are similar ime, though many are a bit less needy than GRs.

Oddly enough, I consider both of my dogs to be "high energy" mixes, but they're happy to just chill with me in the house - I can't deal with a dog that doesn't have an off switch like that.  My perfect dog is highly active and biddable when needed and chill when not working or playing and so far herding breeds generally meet those requirements pretty well vs. other breed groups.

I used to be the same way."Oh everyone has a Lab" way of thinking but now that I have one and have experienced thier loyalty/energy/trainability its like "Oh, THIS is why they are so popular!" lol
