I wanna play "Guess the Breed"! (Liesje)

Let's hear some opinions on Coke.  Do you think he could get an ILP?  He's very attentive, food motivated, and wants to please.  I think he'd make a good rally dog eventually.

I'm not sure of his exact weight and size.  Kenya is 21" and 55lbs.  Coke is taller than her, so likely heavier as well.  I've included a few pics of them both for comparison.  Note: his back end and tail were shaved b/c of matting.  He's supposed to have longer hair all over.  His eyes are brown and his tongue is black/purple.  He walks sort of strange and I wonder if he will have hip problems later in life.  His hips/rear legs just seem very oddly placed to me, but whatever.

A lot of people see collie, but look at the shape of his head in the last pic.  It doesn't look like a Collie head in profile.  I don't know the terms for dog heads, but it's like a rounded dome, it reminds me of a spaniel or setter (those are two breeds I'm familiar with, doesn't necessarily mean they are in the mix).

    Thoughts?

    I can see Collie...his muzzle.

Collie x Chow x GSD would be my guess. As to ILP? he doesn't look like enough of a definite breed to me...so not sure there.

Oh, I found a pic of his mom and his brother, if that helps.  I cannot hotlink them here, but....

     mom is certainly a collie....

and laugh if you want, but i think he is a dobie/rottiex collie.... and the spaniel head could have come from that rottie/dobie union. i also see that rottie head in his brother.

and the uniform markings are a dead giveaway... HAD to be a father with that as dominant colours.

Mom is collie X some sort of spaniel (going by coloration and head)

My guess is there's something big black and not so furry in mom's past.  Possibly Dobie or Rottie- Either would give the height.  Dobie would give that tight abdominal tuck.

Laugh all you want, but here are my choices.

Shep, collie, chow, gorden setter or rottie for the coloring.

I'm looking through the rescue's gallery ans suspect this may be another brother.  The timing is right.  If so, I see a lot more Collie...

    Gryphon

And look at this guy!!! HAS to be another brother:

    Guinness

My original guess (based on pics before we met Coke) was Collie x GSD.  Those black/tan markings are also found in GSDs, same gene as rotts and dobes.  But....I dunno!....

hadnt thought of a Gordon.. that could also explain the spaniel head and the tucked up tummy.

i also noticed the mom has a saddle back - after i posted... so she could have lent a good deal of the black and tan markings too.

their markings all too perfect and uniform. i bet this was an intentional cross that got way out of hand, or mom ran away/lost/stolen/ etc. who ever did it.. seems like they were being selective on colours.... just my observations though.

I think the LC (long coat) gene is found in Rotts...but not Dobes to my knowledge...the long coat I believe needs to be on both sides apparently or recessively, which is why I stick with Chow or GSD...both of which obviously carry a commonly expressed LC gene.

Someone better versed in genetics can perhaps shed light on the long coat inheritance in those breeds,

In Akitas 9here's my understanding subject to correction) :

two NC's can produce LC's if they both carry the gene for LC

one LC parent and one NC parent NOT carrying LC cannot produce LC's...but certain whelps will THEN carry LC/NC as part of their makeup so they COULD produce it.

LC to LC will of course produce LC's

How about English Shepherd? We have friends whose ES just passed away and he could have been a cousin to these lovely boys!
    • Gold Top Dog

He is highly unlikely to ILP.  He could be registered AMBOR and compete in UKC.  Due to recent problems in agility, ILPs have been tightened down significantly.  I dont know the status of mix breed competition for companion events in AKC.  That has been discused but I have checked on it recently.

As to breed herding working cominations would be my suggestion, herding sporting second choice.  The black and tan/rust color is actually in many breed histories, so a number of different combinations could cause it to appear..  I would propose more than 3 breeds..  His body type suggests the leaner style dogs.

I thought English shepherd too.....mom may be an English shepherd. Either that, or my guess is Collie x Aussie for mom, Chow x GSD for dad. I really can't see the collie in coke, but it seems obvious after seeing mom....I'm going with at least four breeds in there though....

Rats.  Oh well, there's always APDT rally if we want to do obedience.  Mutts can be in their club.  I don't think he'd be good for agility.  He doesn't have much motivation to move quickly, and I'm still concerned about his hips and overall structure, not knowing his history or parentage.  Kenya...she was bred specifically for agility!  I think we will eventually do therapy work with him.  It would be good for my DH since he's currently getting a degree to be a special ed teacher.  He would enjoy going to a children's hospital or something like that.  Coke likes other dogs, but his excitement can be controlled once he has some training.  Other than that, he's very nice with all people.  Not too pushy, but definitely not reserved like Kenya.  If I'm petting another animal, he has to come over and put his head in my lap.

I guess mom is an Aussie-Collie mix.  I'm guessing dad must be a Rottie.  So I say Aussie-Collie-Rottie.  He's a beauty whatever he is for sure

I thought Gordon setter too but they are really not that common enough of a breed to be that many mixes out there (only 726 GS were registered with the AKC in 2006). Not saying it couldn't happen but I agree on the dobe or rottie father would be much more likely.
