    doberman question

This guy is moving and has a 6 yr old doberman. He wants 100 dollars for it. What should I look for to insure that I'm not taking on someone else's problem? I don't have kids but owner says it's good with kids and that dog has some obedience training and is house broken. Thanks

Are you familiar with the breed? Are you familiar with this particular dog?

I am not familiar with this dog. Never met the dog before. All I know is dobermans are very smart and protective. My dad tells me when I was little our doberman wouldn't let me crawl towards the fireplace or wood burning stove.

The poor thing looks like he has been tied to a tree its whole life!! There are sores on his legs and his nails are in terrible condition.

I'm not saying that makes him a bad dog but if you feel you can handle a Doberman and are willing to take him in and have him live in the HOUSE with you please rescue this guy. And read up on the breed. They are extremely people oriented dogs and 'clingy' so will want to follow you around everywhere.

    Those pictures made me sad....[:(]

If you rescue this guy, he will be devoted to you for life.  Their bonds with the owners are phenomenal, but they can be strange around people outside the household-especially if they haven't been given opportunities to socialize as they grow and develop.   I would ask the guy who owns the dog, if he would consent to a trial weekend, where you can have the dog in your home and judge for yourself if you can work with him-could also sneak over to your vet for a quick evaluation if you are concerned about expensive health issues

    prince,
I was concerned too after seeing the pics because the owner gave me the impression that the chaining was temporary ,but you can clearly tell that it's not (grass killed)

    sue,
    that's a good idea

pics: I have a third pic of the dog asleep indoors with owner's kid; didn't want to post pic of the kid on here. Guess I could edit it.

heartworm check first.  If he is HW positive, it doesnt seem appropriate to expect payment.  Put the money toward the treatment if you prefer.

I've got 2 Dobies and those pics are disturbing. I hope you do rescue that poor baby and if not you, someone.

I think the pics. made me upset to see this guy in the shape he is in. I think that nothing would be better than to get him out of this environment and into a place where he knows he's loved and will be cared for. However I would definitely recommend doing a little reading up on the breed and making sure he fits your lifestyle. I also think it's a great idea to ask about a trial run and if the owner says no I'd be very leary at what the owner may be trying to hide. I also agree the vet check would be a really good idea. I would ask who his current Vet is and maybe give a call to see what he/she could tell you. What is the reason for the owner selling the dog at age 6? Have they been the owners since he was a puppy? When and where did they get him from? Don't be afraid to ask alot of questions.

    Good Luck!
