• mrv Posted : 6/19/2006 8:07:15 PM There are actually four types of belgian shepherds.  The difference between the varieties is more a determination of the breeder and kennel than it is outside covering.  The varieties are all developed in the same general time period and geographic region.  The names are derived from the locale that "concentrated" a specific coat type.  Groendahl (black long coats) Tervuren (brown and black long coats) Malinois (short brown and black coats) and Laekenois (wired black and brown coats).  Color varies from very pale yellow (fawn) to deep setter red (mahogany).  The primary differences you will seen in belgians appear to be related to the purpose for which the dog was bred.  Working dogs vs companion dogs. 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • Jordan Philpott Posted : 6/20/2006 12:02:02 AM The Belgian sheepdog (groenendael) and Tervuren are the same breed (in every registry except AKC), so in general, they will have much of the same temperment. But most people like to stick with breeding one variety anyways, and so the varieties have developed differences (there are exceptions, of course). We find that tervuren are alot more laid back and low drive compared to groenendaels. We find them to be slower in agility, with less intensity and "Belgian freakiness." • mrv Posted : 6/20/2006 5:03:39 AM Regional differences appear to be at work.   In the midwest, tervs are becoming finer and finer.  To the point we are loosing bone and subtance in my opinion.  The differences are not breed related rather, the specific result of the selections made by the breeders in producing the dogs.  One easy way to illustrate this is to look at the malinois produced in kennels traditionally producing for police and secruity work and the kennels producing dogs for show and companion purposes.  As to wolfsoul, thanks for the spelling of Groenendael, I always get that wrong [] 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available.
