    German shepherd Puppy ?

We found out today that two of Sky's littermates passed away with little warning.  One passed shortly after haveing puppy shots and the other puppy died a day after being dewormed.  The litter will be 13weeks old in the next day or two. My question is could this somehow be linked to their bloodline? or is it common to loose puppies this young?  Why I ask is because I own a puppy out of this litter and I'm alittle worried.

Sky was checked out by the vet the other day  everthing came back good.

I am sorry to say but my personal opinion is the breeder isnt telling you something. Truly I would guess they had parvo or distemper or some other puppy disease. Or maybe something happened to them that the breeder doesnt want to admit (got hit by a car, escaped, got killed by other dogs, exc.) I have never heard of a puppy dying due to getting wormed or due to shots, and it is highly unlikely that it would happen in the same litter but then again I am no expert or vet. I am sure others can tell you for sure. I would say that your puppy is fine though, and you dont have anything to worry about. .

I lost an apparently healthy pup at 5 months...in fact he'd gotten his health cert two weeks before his death.

Vaccines CAN stress the immune system.  And it's possible that a wormer could have caused problems, particularly if the owners used the otc crap stuff.  I'd have a complete blood panal done on my pup prior to any vaccines, and I'd also make danged sure she was given parvo/distemper ONLY and not on the same day.

And yes, there could be a genetic condition that the breeder either didn't disclose, or doesn't even know about herself because she didn't have the parents health tested prior to breeding.

I would have never thought about the wormer causeing problems. Your right aboutt the Vaccines they can stress the immune system.   We are getting sky spayed soon as shes old enough, that way there is no chance of accidental breedings.

While it can't be said for sure that the bloodline has anything to do with it (not knowing the entire situation) I would be more pressed to say that the vaccinations may have had something to do with the pups passing.

Some puppies do have allergic reactions to vaccines and depending on the type of vaccine used this could certainly have been the case. Fatalities are not uncommon in this situation. Bloodwork is often done before vaccines in case there is a pre-disposition to vaccine related allergic reactions to test.

Just in case, I would keep an eye on my puppy before and after each vaccine and worming and would not start the lepto part of the vaccine schedule until the puppy is older - 14 weeks or so.

    Good luck.

I'm going to disagree just slightly on the vaccines.  Unless Lepto is a problem in your area, why  vaccinate for it?  Why vaccinate for corona virus which can ONLY live in parvo when the pup is vaccinated for parvo? If the pup can't get parvo, the pup certainly can't get a "parasitical" secondary infection.

I follow Dr. Jean Dodd's vaccine protocol.  She recommends pavo/distemper ONLY at 9, 12 and between 16-20 weeks with rabies no sooner than 24 weeks.
