Chessie/Setter in the mix?

    Chessie/Setter in the mix?

This is a dog that turned up at my parent's house last Christmas. They live in a very rural area, and this guy stayed in the fields "lurking" for a couple of days. While I was there, Dad & I were able to coax him to come up to us. The pictures don't show it well , but the hair on his tail, belly and around his ears is longish and feathery  somewhat like a setter (irish or english)  and shows some light to deep chocolate coloration on his back hip area and chest. I've only been around him a short time once since then, but these were my brief observations.

    Loves my dad....
    Is very attentive
Seems to learn quickly example, he jumps up "at" you in greeting. After a couple of times of pointing to the side and telling him off...he would sitting nicely upon approach.
Has a goofy jolly sense of fun....would take his play toy, and vary between scooping it up with his nose, and balancing on the end of his nose then tossing it up in the air and catching it... this seems to be a self invented game for him.
    Loves playing catch /retrieving sticks.
Very submissive.....at first to the point of being a submissive wetter but that seems to have improved.
Seems to be very sensitive to verbal scolding.
About in the 20" range (at shoulders) maybe 40lbs?
Seems to want to please, has a playful low to mid level energy and seems to be good at entertaining himself.

My parents tell me he has tried to chase the cats a time or 2 but immediately stopped when scolded, and apparently hasn't done it since. In fact one of the cats has "adopted"  and "loved" on  him...so that's working out.

Well obviously he's mostly lab....I'm wondering about the slight setter look to his hair, could he have some Chessie in him? (even border collie maybe?)

I don't have a clue, but I just have to say he's one gorgeous little dog. He's a lucky boy and so are your parents.[:D] He sounds just perfect.

He could have some Setter of  in him.  Here's some pics of Mick, a Lab/English Setter.  I tried to find pics as close to the ones you posted as possible.  His top coat lays flat, but is about 2-3 inches long.  You don't realize how long it is until you pet him (or find hair on your clothes!  LOL).  I knew someon who had a Lab/Irish Setter mix.  You couldn't tell that dog had any Setter in her at all,  She looked like a pure bred Lab.

I don't see any Chessie in him.  A Chessie's coat is woolly and feels a bit like a sheep's coat.  Chessies should also have no feathering.  The hair on their ears is short like that of a lab.

Perhaps he has some shepherd in him?  He's a handsome buy, nonetheless.
