Pit pup

    Pit pup

I have recently acquired a pit bull puppy. I estimate about 6-8 weeks. He is pretty small. I'll be taking him to a vet tomorrow and then I should know his age.

My idea is that I should take him to training classes. I have another dog that didn't go, and he is pretty well behaved. But I feel like, given what his size will be, and his breed (as they are stronger dogs), it might be beneficial for me to have more control of him.

I'll have to put pics up in the pic section soon. He is absolutely gorgeous. And the circumstances that I got him are pretty fate-ful.

I would put him in obedience classes but call around and find out what age the pup needs to be before taking him.  Good luck with your new pup and I would love to see pictures.

Yes--training classes are your friends!!!  Take many of them!!!

And socialization up the wazzo!!!  Socialize, socialize, socialize!!!

With the current state of pit breeding these days, who knows what size he will be.  Expect anywhere from 40lbs-100 lbs.

Have you checked with your local government as far as what they think of pits?  What about your homeowner's or renter's policy?  some insurance companies will not cover you if you have this breed of dog/pit mix.  Also make sure you pup gets plenty of training and socialization.  Also you should be aware that some people will steal this breed of dog to put in fights and such. Unfortunately because of bad people this breed is not well liked and people fear that they are bad dogs.  You may have to stand up and fight for you rights as a dog owner.  I know that there are areas that keep track of who has pits and pit mixes and that they often do house checks.  Best of luck to you and your new pup.

^Very true.  I believe State Farm has a policy of reviewing a dogs bite history rather than their breed.

I had Nationwide and they were like that when I had my Rott but we got grandfathered in.  I no longer have my Rott.  The insurance company I am with now you cannot have Rotts, GSD, Dobies, Pits or mixes of those types.

Congrats on your new pup! You have chosen a very strong minded and willfull breed, puppy classes and socialization are the key to success. Many times I have seen people aquire pitbulls and not have the patience or time to take care of such a high maintnance dog but they payoff is a loyal friend who will give their life for you. Firestorm is right, you are going to have to deal with breeedism and a lot of negativity from stupid uneducated people but it is a great feeling to train your dog properly and prove them wrong. WHERE ARE THE PICS??? Best luck to you!

Yes, "patience" is a key word here.  By the time Miss Sally is where I would like her to be obedience-wise, I think I will have the patience of a Saint....
