Chinese Cresteds :)

    Chinese Cresteds :)

I have to admit, my little one is a mix - but she is still a doll! Does anyone here have a Chinese Crested or mix?

    Pictures, pictures:)

Cresteds are one of my favorite breeds.

This is my precious Rafiki. He's a powderpuff which makes him all the more flashier, in my opinion! I've only had him for about two weeks but it's crazy how we instantly bonded. I take him everywhere including church and he just goes with the flow. To be completely honest I did not know very much about the breed and what I did know were simply myths. For only being a puppy, he's extremely addaptable. Furthermore, we've gone on three roadtrips now and he's already a pro. I'm the luckiest gal to have such an amazingly hansome sidekick!

    Beautiful baby!

Who talked you into Poodle feet?
    • Puppy
At this point in the game, his puppy hair makes him look alot like a poodle. Assuming you are talking about his trimming, that's the way his hair grows, quite convient! I have not gotten him trimmed but I'm thinking he would appreciate it during the Florida summer.  Several people have thought he is a poodle but he's actually a Chinese Crested Powderpuff. As far as I know, breeders must cross somewhat hairy dogs with hairless to get the hairless otherwise it turns out catostrophic. So in the case of Rafiki, his littermates were hairless and he had hair.  But anyways, he's a AKC registered Chinese Crested Powderpuff :) There's no French blood in this boy!

I have a hairy hairless which means she looks like a thinly coated PP when she's in full coat.  I keep her shaved now it's summer.   This is Zhi.

LOL, sorry to break it to you, but his feet and face have been shaved. Puffs have beards, and hairy feet. No dog's feet just come like that:) You said you'd only had him two weeks. Maybe his previous owner shaved them?

He's a beautiful boy. When I was working at a large chain store's grooming salon, my manager argued with me about a PP Crested. She insisted that he was a Poodle mix, LOL. I had to go get a book and show her a Puff Puppy:)

Hmm well to be completely honest I did question the way his hair grew but several people have assured me that's the way his hair grows. My story: his breeder was going to take him to the pound as he was "worthless" so he just ended up in my life by fate. I didn't do a whole lot of research prior to me getting him because I wasn't really planning on getting a little guy.  I'm learning as we go and this is just an example of what I'm going through! I've always had labs so this is a jump in more ways than his hair difference. Thanks for the heads up, haha.

LOL, It looks like a groomer thought he was a Poodle, with an undocked tail. I *like* clean feet, and I like painted toenails, and bows, and all sorts of silly stuff. Not everybody likes that, though. It's up to you whether to keep the feets shaved, or just trimmed (which would look a little different, but still pretty, he's a gorgeous guy!). You can also have his ears shaved, to help them stand (he'll look more like a show crested) and keep his face shaved, or let him grow a beard. There's *lots* of looks for a Puff!

Crest care has some good examples of different looks on a Puff.

Yes, his face has been shaved certainly.  I've always kept Zhi's face and neck shaved, and just recently started trimming down her body.   You can get a little $15 handheld battery run trimmer from a pet supply place and keep that touched up (it will start growing out pretty soon!).  Or you can let it grow out and let him look like a terrier sort of doggy.  Or shave him down all the way and have people say, "Soooooo, it's a dog, right?"  [:D]

Cresties are so much fun!  I call Zhi "My Little Pony".  Not to imply that she's a plaything, but it's so much fun to fuss over her.  And she adores it.  My border collies are all wash and wear and wouldn't be caught dead near a topknot bow.  Zhi lives for the attention and just  prances after a grooming session.

Well, the hairless or shaved down Cresteds do resemble My Little Ponies, LOL.

My friend recently told me that she's looking for a Gypsy Vanner, and I said, "Oh, those Chinese Crested horses?" LOL.

Well now that I've told a few friends about my misunderstanding with Rafiki's hair they all say "Well I was going to say something..." Oh gee thanks guys!
At any rate, thanks so much for the link of all the different hairstyles, I enjoyed that. I do have a question regarding his ears. Not that it's a great concern but out of curiousity, does it depend on the dog whether his ears will be erect or flop down? Obviously with all his hair he's got allittle more weight than the hairless, but at what point will his ears be like they "should"? I mean, are his ears going to flop down like this for the rest of his life or will they be erect once he's older? I'm not really into taping as I'm more of the au naturale but I was just curious. Glad to see there's a few crested experts out there to help a greenhorn like me.

Rafiki is just adorable! I love the powderpuffs. That's terrible that his breeder was going to dump him at the pound. :( No reputable breeder would ever do that and I can't imagine anyone being that heartless. Why did she think he was "worthless"?
    • Gold Top Dog
It does depend on the dog, somewhat. Something that you can do to help them stand is have the groomer shave them, next time you're there. This is common practice for Yorkie, Westie, Crested, and any other erect eared, floofy pups:) It gets the weight off of the ear, so it's more likely to stand. You *can* tape them, if you really, really want them to stand, but I wouldn't. It's a pain, and you'd need someone familiar with the breed to show you how to do it.

Which part of Florida do you live in?
