I'm going to go in a different direction from most and ask if you've looked into Standard Schnauzers. They're a good solid medium sized dog that is bred to be an all-around companion/hunter/guard/family dog. They are devoted, have a great sense of humor and are extremely intelligent. They aren't dog aggressive, make good watchdogs and are good with kids. They are nicely active without being hyper, love the outdoors and do VERY well in obedience work.The only downside is the grooming aspect but if you don't care about show cuts, a good solid brushing every couple of days will keep the coat tangle free and they don't shed. Oh, and how can you not love a face like this?
