    Help with determining breeds

    Hey everyone.

I recently adopted a little puppy that I appropriately name Bauer (he often gets in and out of trouble just like his CTU counterpart, Jack Bauer from 24.)  When we visited the home of his previous residence, the man told me he was pure pit bull, but something just didn't sound right.  We saw the mother dog and she was the sweetest pit bull I have ever seen, but I don't know what a pure pit looks like.  There could have been something mixed in. Also, tt was as if the owner was trying to convince me that Bauer was pure pitbull.  I honestly, could care less what breed he is.  All I know is that this dog will be loved and spoiled every day of his life.

Being a first time puppy owner, I never realized how many people ask "Aww, cute dog, what is he?".  I usually respond with "We think he is pitbull/black lab mix."  The reason I came to this conclusion is because that is what his trainer said.  We know he is half pit, but some of the other suggesstions included Boxer, American Bulldog, Black Lab, Dalmation, and maybe one or two more.

I've been looking around on the different threads and usually some good suggesstions are given.  Can you do the same for me?  At the very least you will be able to look at my baby, Bauer  :)

    Thank you!

Hi there - congrats on the new puppy, he is adorable!

Bauer looks a lot like the "pure" pit bull puppies I use to see in rescue work - usually bred by people who breed pits for the wrong reason/have no idea what they are doing when breeding. No offense is intended by this, it's just that when people who don't know what they are doing breed dogs, the results can look and act less and less like the breed standard with each generation.

My guess is that he is an American Pit Bull Terrier. You can Google and find details on the difference in the breeds(APBT, Am. Staff and Staffordshire Bull Terrier).

If Bauer grows into the dog I think he will, he'd be around 20 -22 inches tall at the shoulder and 70 lbs, and a cuddle bug!

I could also be wrong! Good luck, it will be interesting to see what others have to say.

Also, and I am sure you will hear this from everyone else on the forum, obedience school is a must for any dog, but especially for pits who have a bad rap with the public and will grow up to be very strong dogs. They are a ton of fun to work with and can do anything!

    Pit_Pointer,

Thanks for your comments.  I'm not too concerned about what he is.  I only wanted a companion and friend to experience life with for the next decade plus change.  I know he wasn't bred for the wrong reasons, I think it was an accident actually.  The person down the street has a pit and he claims his buddy has one too.  He treats his dog like a princess, but you could obviously tell he wanted nothing to do with these puppies.  So, I saw that as an opportunity to help a life and get some enjoyment out of it with a pet, so I swooped in and paid him for one of the puppies.

As for training, already on it.  Bauer attends puppy kidnergarten/socialization classes once a week and is in the middle of one on one certified trainer training.  So far, he has received rave reviews.  He is a typical puppy, but of course carries around that stereotype of pits.

I did what you said and started looking around on google for breeds, and found that Bauer looks a lot like Pit/Lab mix puppies.  Whatever the case, he is perfect just the way he is!

Has he seen a vet? The hair loss around his eyes and muzzle is a bit concerning.

Yeah, Bauer has been to the vet twice so far.  I think the "hair loss" you see is just because of the water.  His eyes and muzzle have no hair loss.  The verdict is that he is a completely healthy puppy.  I was just curious of breed.
