    Let's guess what Butter is!

Alright, I don't think I've ever formally posted about what we think Butter is. The idiot I got him from claimed they were boxer/pit. He HAD a female pit and a male boxer with him...but he had ALOT of adult dogs with him. I have seen SOME boxer/pit mixes that look like Butter...but I've just never really been convinced.

He's almost 6 months now, and about 65 pounds-ish. He is lankey is HECK, and the biggest goofball ever. He's smart, but doofy. His personality is pretty much a cross between a pit and a hound- he's smart, happy, and SUPER playful- but he's not really inclined to do anything if there isn't something in it for him. He's also SUPER vocal and has a really houndish yodel that is absolutely the loudest thing I've ever heard- nothing like a boxer or a pittie.[&:]

My hypothesis? I think he's a blackmouth cur, or at least some kind of pit/hound mix. Blackmouth Curs are often mixed with pits, from what I understand, to make good hog dogs.

Here's some pics of him from a few days ago. Excuse the dog-created mess:

I know he could be a mix of who knows how many things, but it's fun to guess. His personality reminds me of every hound I've ever met, with the goofy hyperactive friendliness of most pits I've met. I'm seriously thinking Blackmouth Cur, or SOME kind of hound/pit mix.

    So....opinions?

i dont see boxer or pit, but he does look a lot like the dogs in the links you provided.

he is super cute btw! i bet he is a trouble maker! [:D]

Down where you live, he could definitely be a Black Mouth Cur.  There are a lot of "good ol' huntin' boys" who, if the dog isn't up to par, drive to the woods, take the collar off and drive away.

I'll bet he's got quite a personality.  Very handsome son-of-a-gun.  The original Old Yeller was a Black Mouth Cur dog.

Maybe a little Pit? I don't see any boxer at all though. Just my 2 cents.

As it was mentioned before in this thread, bull terrier was probably added to the original mix to make them a more tenacious hog dog.

Actually E. pointers have a bit of bull terrier in them, too (a bit of bully breed to get that upturned nose) to make them more tenacious and steadfast.  If he yodels and acts houndy, I would still think BMC.  What kind of prey drive does he have?

Not as strong as I'd think a hound should have- but that could be my fault. I have alot of small pets and a flock of chickens- and I got him at only 4 and a half weeks old, so I squashed his prey drive pretty early. IF he thinks he can get away with chasing something, he will- but if I'm watching, he wouldn't dare. I've fed him whole chickens before with the feathers on, so he definitely udnerstands small animals as food- but I wouldn't say he lives to hunt/chase things. I'd say his prey drive is pretty much average for a normal dog, and below average for a hound.

But yeah, I've been leaning towards BMC for a while now. It's just so weird though- the guy had several dogs there, none of which looked anything like a BMC. He claimed his male Boxer and his female Pit were the parents- but you know, I'm thinking he may have stolen the whole litter and probably had no clue what they were. Who knows.

I would say i see pit in there... (but thats me- I think I see pits everywhere lol)- My neighbor has a pit/german shepard mix that looks exactly like butter, weird I know. I don't see any boxer though.  and I'm sure hounds are much more popular by you than up here in jersey so I don't see a lot of hounds anyway.

    if they're lucky....

he looks like he could be BMC and definitely has some kind of bully in him, but that tail is freaky long and lanky.... reminds me more of an undocked doberman tail.

prey drive is a funny thing with these breeds, and i am saying this from my own personal experience from dealing with these kinds of dogs.
my own have healthy prey drives for bulldogs. BUT they also know who is friend and who is foe. but they also know when to leave stuff alone. With Kaydee, if i say "Get it" then i had better mean it because she will most certainly get it and do her best to bring part of it back.... i found that out the hard way when i jokingly said "get it" when a dillo was in the yard.... she went after it and was gone for three hours, we could hear her in the distance barking from one end of the forest to the other. and i felt terrible for doing that.. i didnt think she would actually go for it. now i know. she and the other bullies are alway son high alert for something to go after, but they stay put unless i say go. of course their first reaction is to try to bite the heads off baby chicks, so i have to be extra vigilant with them - stop before they start. so far so good, but they have the look in their eyes that they want to eat them, but they have amazing restraint! thats like turning down a fresh, hot donut, right off the rack.... my dogs also love kittens, in a good way! but once again, if they see a strange one, they have that predatory look in their eye like they REALLY want a piece of it, but they dont dare try it.
So, i take prey drive with a grain of salt. it depends on the dog and its training. i know i can trust MY dogs with small fuzzy things, but i dont think anyone will have that much faith in me and them lol

as for ole yeller. the dog in the book was a combination of dogs from the author's family history as Texas settlers. several individuals went into the character. the book never specified what he was except some kind of yellow bulldog looking mutt. or an "Amalgamated Pot Hound" as one character put it.
And i never have heard a consistent story about Spike, the actor dog. one source says he was BMC and another says he was just a dog from the pound. they even gave him a hair cut for the part of ole yeller because he had a lot of floof around his neck.
i doubt Rud Weatherwax will ever reveal just where Spike came from either. and who knows, he may really have gotten him from the pound. so its really just a guess about his breeding and history. he always looked like he had some kind of mastiff in him to me.
    • Gold Top Dog
Hmmmm, maybe a Blackmouth Cur mixed with ?? Or possibly a Hound mixed with Pit Bull.
    • Gold Top Dog
I can definitely see BMC. His face also kinda looks like a ridgeback's. His coloring also screams english mastiff to me. It doesn't matter to me though, i still think he's one of the cutest dogs EVER!!!! I've loved seeing him grow up!
    • Gold Top Dog
the BMC thing is interesting, as is the speculation about ridgeback....

isn't it funny how puppies grow up and don't look a thing like you thought they might???

having said that, rosie has a "hound-like" yodel that she will only unleash when her "prey" (in this case, the tennis ball) is out of reach, and i don't think she's got an ounce of hound in her, so don't completely count out the pittie based on the yodel.

actually, he's become quite dashing and lean!  i don't see any boxer at all.  his ears are pretty pit-like, but that's about the end of the pit that i see.  (maybe better for him?)

yay butters, you are soooo cute!
    • Gold Top Dog
Hmmm.....  *I remember when he was so tiny...*

Now that he's a little older, I can't see the boxer or pit in him, to be perfectly honest.

Some sort of hound-perhaps mixed with golden lab-a hound yodel is pretty much unique to hounds.
