What kind of dog is this???

    Hello guys and gals,

I just picked up a new pooch from the shelter. He is absolutley beautiful, at least I think so. I am curious as to what he may be mixed with?? So far I have heard German shepherd, Pit bull, Akita, Husky, Sheba enu, etc. He has beautiful blue eyes. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks, Rich.

I suspect he's Pit/GSD.  his coat is pretty short to be an Akita, but it's a possibility.

I think he's a husky mix, personally.  Not sure with what.

Not sure what he could be!  Sorry!  He is very pretty though!  I don't know why, but I cannot look at animals with blue eyes!  It creeps me out!  He is a doll!  Hope someone can help you with his breed!

Thanks!  Really? blue eyes creep you out?? That's the main reason I picked him. I like cars that are unique, I guess I like uniqe dogs as well? LOL. Out of all of the dogs there he just jumped out at me. He has a limp too. He will be my best bud I'm sure! He had been a stray, was adopted out and then returned. I decided to take him as he only had a couple of days left. He has got to be the laziest dog I've ever seen as well. Oh well. I picked him![;)]

definitely not shepherd. Looks pretty akita to me...maybe even shiba inu. How big is he?

I'm guessing that he's around 40-45 pounds. About 22" or so tall at the shoulders and around 32"-35" from his nose to his rear. (tail not included) The shelter had him listed as a shepherd. They seemed to of had quite a few of the breeds wrong though.

    I don't see Akita personally.

I'm not sure of the mode of inheritance on blue eyes...but that ikely your best clue. Akita's can have blue eyes but this is typically seen in white or piebald marked dogs, and it is rarely, RARELY seen.

I would tend to think it is like people...with blue being recessive to brown...meaning your dogs parents BOTH carried blue eyes dominant...to put it on the pup. So either both had blue eyes....both had brown but carried a gene for blue...or any combination thereof.

Boxer might make sense because Boxers do carry a blue eyed gene that's often expressed in undermarked dogs or white dogs. They are also are often self colored in the shade of your dog.

What is also possible is that your dog is a mix of two mixed breed dogs...my guess therefor is that a Boxer Mix (that mix being something with erect ears) bred with a Husky mix and out came your dog [;)]

for what its worth... he has a broad head like an AmStaff, a bully chest as well.
i would say possibly akita/amstaff with husky/shepherd.. which would explain those ears...
another possibility is chow or lab.... but that short coat suggests amstaff.

I see an Akita Head, especially from the side:

The eyes are throwing me off but I think the fur looks pit or am-staff.

It's hard to tell. I think he's beautiful. What's hard is that mixed breeds often have several breeds instead of just two crossed breeds. Another thing is that besides bully breeds, the breeds that most people see in him would have much thiicker, longer fur.
So maybe he does have "pit bull" (I put it in quotes because I don't mean specifically APBT, maybe AmStaff, Staffie Bull, APBT, etc.) and that made his coat closer.

I'm seeing just a smidge of Boxer. Could be just about anything else. You could postulate a lot of breeds, since the blue eye is recessive - start with Husky on one side and Aussie on the other, or take your pick. Then just keep on breeding in, with the blue eye allele being passed on from one generation to the next. So almost certainly a multigenerational mutt.

Most likely as you live with him and meet other dogs and compare him, something may strike you as being dominant in his makeup, some breed he may favor, but nothing really stands out, looking at him. That's the fun of mutts!

I've got one, took me two years to realize she was a Finnish spitz mix, and it was the craziest chance that I found out how that could be.

he might even have lab which would make a short yet dense coat.. but those ears... i swear its like someone cut them off another dog and pasted them on his head lol

Hmmm...can't help you with the breed ideas but I also love the eyes.  Of course I'm a bit biased!  :o)
