have really shiney coats?  just curious as ruby, our lab/cur/?mix has an extremely shiney coat with a wave to it.  she has feathering on her buttocks and tail.  it is seriously, can't keep your hands off, soft/slick[:)]  it even reflected the sunset one evening[:D

It's mostly dependent on diet, in all honesty- genetics play a role too. My corgi and collie both have very shiny coats. My previous collie didn't, but her hair was such a different texture.
i didn't think about it being related to diet:)  i do give them an authority puppy supplement/treat and they do get raw a few times a week, depending on their activity level.  snoopy's coat is shiney, too, but not as soft as ruby's, his has a little more stiffness to it.  thanks for the idea/info!

Sometimes coat being less shiny or moreso is related to the thyroid function which can affect skin and hair condition-that is not to say that your animals would have thyroid problems if their coat was not shiny and glossy, but that it is just a reflection of individual differences in thyroid function, just like people.  I regularly add organic kelp to my dogs food-which is rich in nutrient like iodine which in turn improve and enhance natural thyroid function

Diet IS part of it, but some of it is breed and coat texture.

A Puli or Komondor is not going to shine like a Black Lab or Golden retriever.  A smooth coated dog is going to appear "shinier" than a long coated dog more often than not.  In the case of many rough coated Collies, the hair on the back (where it is flat) can be quite shiny, but the sides appear dull (even though the coat is perfectly healthy).
