    Sighthounds!!!!! WooHoo!

I just wanted to celebrate the best kept secret of the dog world.  The sighthound group.  Those dogs that hunt, and chase primarily using their eyes to guide them.

This is an incredibly intelligent and independent type of dog that is fun to watch, and will never let you have a dull moment at home.

I have fallen in love with almost all of these breeds because of their boldness, their movement, their intelligence, and their drive.

If I were to list my top 3, they would be Pharaohs, Greys and Scottish Deerhounds.  Anybody else care to share what they love about sighthounds??

I have also noticed that they can be some one the hardest dogs to find! Very few reputable breeders.

The best way to meet the breeders is to attend shows.  You will be surprised at how many people you will see time and time again up and down the coast or in the neighboring states.  If you catch them after they've shown, they'll usually spend some time talking to you about the dogs-who's having litters, who's dogs are doing what and other dog show stuff.  It's very interesting and you meet some really cool dogs too.

I don't think you REALLY want my complete list... so I will give you a partial one![:)]

They are gentle and mild mannered. They are highly intelligent and want nothing but to please their owners.  With many of the sighthound breeds, they don#%92t require much discipline and when you need to discipline, a very soft technique is all that is required.

Many breeds (except Pharaoh hounds…[;)]) rarely bark but occasionally do make other “unique” sounds. SEE BELOW for an example of the unique “rooing” and other sounds they make.

My favorite things about the sighthounds though, is their love of humor. They absolutely have a sense of humor and LOVE to be super silly, play tricks on other the dogs or their owners. My dogs provide me with nonstop entertainment (when they aren#%92t sleeping 19 hours a day of course…) which is the other thing I love about many of the sighthound breeds is their love of sleeping![sm=sleep34.gif]

Techinically, I don't have a sighthound, but I love them.  And I harbor strong suspicions (as does my vet and others who have met him) that Pofi's mix includes a sighthound breed. He does not bark much, btw, but does roo.  Really and truly does.  When friends here him in the background and aren't familiar with the sound, they are really surprised because they've not heard dogs vocalize in that way.

I love Greys and am quite enamored with your Pharohs, Ed.  And I always love meeting Irish Wolfhounds - they are amazing.

I love the elegance of the SH.  I love the way they smell and feel after napping in the sunshine.  I love the ancientness of them.  I love that they are clever, keep me on my toes and make me work to get them to run the agility course.  I love being known as THE person with THE basenjis in agility in my area.  I love the wrinkly brow of  the baby.

I love these things about them too.  They prefer to laugh at life and look for interesting ways of accomplishing tasks rather than being straightforward.

I gotta say, anyone with Basenjis (more than one) has to have a sense of humor because I know that they probably lay awake during the day having little meetings on what trouble to get into next.

And to anyone that is enamored with PHs I gotta tell you one thing:  They bark.  They bark alot.  They whine.  They have a high pitched bark when they're frustrated, and a bark that at full volume will penetrate to the very core of your soul.  God help you if they find out that you can be startled by a bark.  They will sneak up behind you at every opportunity and bark loudly-just to see your reaction.  And then leap up and bounce off you as if to say "Now THAT was funny...I'll be back in a few to do it again."

This is Pardee (the race track named him that).  He was sweet and loving and lots of fun to walk.  I used to walk him every day.  Then not long after they got him he was bit on a walk (not with me, thankfully) and became completely frightened of the outside.  He'd barely go out the door to do his business.  And, he started to not even do that.

The owner(who was very intolerant, in my opinion) phased out my visits and eventually gave him back.

I still miss him.  He was really, really sweet.  He just needed way more than that man was able to give.  If I didn't have a dog already I would of taken him myself.  And, I'm pretty sure he would of let me.

In these photos he was really thin.  These were when he first got home.  But, he did fill out really quickly.  The coat was made by a lady that makes them for the greyhound adoption from the track here.  It was really nice all fleece on the inside and a satin like outside.

He was a really pretty color too.  I think they called it fawn??  I wonder what happened to him?

    Enjoy.

If I said anything but Borzoi I would get bitten by my 5 friends at home.

I absoultely adore the Afghan Hound!!! As soon as I get a house I'm going to look for that perfect dog that I've always wanted since I was a child. My boyfriend wants an Irish Wolfhound, ever since he saw them at a dog show he's fallen in love with the breed. Salukis, Borizoi, Ibizan Hounds and Silken Windhounds are all beautiful as well and I wouldn't mind owning them some day.

Terriers and sighthounds...my two favorite types of dogs!  My mentor's wife has a Borzoi that I adore.  She is very sweet, but a bit of a prissy brat sometimes!  She used to be scared of big dogs so didn't do well in the show ring, but we finally got her over that and is doing great now!  She is just beautiful and very elegant.  Too many of the Borzois in the ring now have become HUGE clunky, square, very straight dogs.  They don't have the elegant curves or soft faces now.  Lily is very curvy and elegant!  Just like a Borzoi should be!

ok, after reading this you guys have me completely confused on what one of my dogs is.  We use her for hog hunting.  She has a good nose, but what blows everyone away is her speed.  She also points.  She has always made that strange rooing noise.  We even named her Wimpy since she always sounds like she is crying.  To add to all of that she will also herd and is used to work cows.  She is extremely intelligent, but I really don't know what the heck she is.  She always has to have a job, and is smart enough to know if we are hunting, working cows, or nothing, in which case she will point at squirrels.
