Hi Brandy,
I have 2 Westies...I don't think they are as high energy as alot of other Terriers - mine def. aren't (and one is a pup). They of course do love to go on walks, wrestle around and are always up for playing, but they also are content to lie around and relax. I've never had issues with either of mine (my oldest is 4) exhibiting negative behaviors due to lack of exercise.
As far as barking, mine only ever bark at other animals that don't live with us...we live in a wooded area and have tons of wildlife traisping through the yard and they feel it's their job to alert us to each and every creature! As far as in the house, though, neither of mine will bark at all (unless they catch a glimpse of a renegade squirrel through the window

I think Westies are a nice combination of sweet and affectionate, but independent as well. My Golden needs to be within touching distance of me at all time - whereas my Westies will usually follow me from room to room, but will do their own thing.
The thing that attracted us to this breed was that having a Golden, we wanted a smaller dog that didn't shed as much, but it also had to be hearty enough to be able to wrestle and play with a bigger dog and kids. Westies definitely are
] We also have 2 cats and both of the dogs tolerate them extremely well (like to play with them) - though if the cats take off running for any reason, the terrier in them will cause them to take chase, and I worry that their instincts could potentially take over in that situation and lead to someone getting hurt, so I'm always watching them (they are crated when I'm not home).
As you can see, I'm a lover of the breed, so apologies for going on and on![
